What are the benefits of leading a healthy active lifestyle for YOU and YOUR community?
Leading a healthy active lifestyle has many benefits. Regular physical activity strengthens our bodies and builds endurance, and it is also promotes our social and mental health as well. Healthy lifestyle practices – including proper nutrition and sleep – enhance our feelings of productivity, boost our self esteem, and help us maintain a positive body image.

Health & Physical Literacy
Today’s concept of what it means to be “healthy” extends well beyond disease reduction and injury prevention. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “as state of a complete physical , mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” Health is not something that simply happens to us. Instead, it is an on going part of our lives for which we are responsible – something we can actively strive for and attain. Promoting and achieve in good health – our own and others’ – means gaining greater control over the factors that enable us to lead healthy and meaningful lives.

Developing our health literacy
Health literacy refers to how well a person can access, understand, and use the health information needed to make good health decisions. Just like developing a literacy skills such as reading and writing, we can develop skills related to health literacy. The term physical literacy is defined as “the motivation and confidence, physical competence, and knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.”

What is healthy and active living?
Healthy active living embraces both health literacy and physical literacy. It means being active, moving with confidence and competence, eating healthily, getting proper sleep, and feeling good. Healthy active living means making as many health conscience choices as we can. These choices affect not only our daily activity level but also eating, sleeping, and social habits. They improve our physical and mental health and minimize risks of illnesses, injuries, and emotional harm. Choosing a healthy active lifestyle and Hanses all aspects of what we generally referred to as wellness

The components of healthy active living
These for dimensions of healthy active living are interconnected and largely fall under our control. Each of us has the ability to make decisions that can positively influence each one of these dimensions.

Physical Health Physical health: is a result of all your body’s important functions working well together. A person in good physical health can more easily….. Fight disease Recover from illness Perform daily routines without feeling tired

Mental Health Mental Health: is a result of positive feelings about yourself and others. Your mental health can influence your decisions. A person in good mental health can more easily…. Deal with stress Cope with change Overcome negative feelings Maintain a positive outlook on life

Social Health Social Health: is a result of your interactions with others and of coping well with social situations. A person in good social health can more easily…. Feel close and connected to other people Maintain good support systems Cope with life’s ups and downs

Spiritual Health Spiritual Health: gives peace of mind.
Spirituality can be gained and expressed by playing an instrument, dancing, work with art materials, or through religion. Good spiritual health can… Give your life a purpose Understand your self-worth Provide you with stress relief Help you develop support systems

A healthy active approach brings with it both short term benefits *benefits you can see and feel right away … and long term benefits *benefits you will be able to see for many years to come BOTH ARE IMPORTANT!

The Many Benefits of Being Active
Physical Benefits Regular physical activity has many benefits of the heart and lungs. Having a healthy heart means less chance of heart disease, high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes. Physical activity makes your bones stronger, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and arthritis. Regular physical activity also increases the strength, endurance and flexibility of muscles, ligaments and tendons.

Cognitive and Academic Benefits Many studies have shown that brain health and cognitive performance improve with regular physical activity. These changes boost memory, and learning, improve decision making, and allow you to think and communicate more effectively.

Social Benefits Physical activity can improve social health through interactions with other people during recreational activities, games, and sports. Being active with someone else – a friends, a family member, teammate, workout buddy – makes physical activity more FUN!

Mental Health Benefits Regular physical activity can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression and has been shown to have a positive impact on self-esteem and sleep habits. It also strengthens your resilience – your ability to find strength in adapting to difficulty, loss, or anything that causes feelings of distress and uncertainty.

Spiritual Benefits People who are physically active are more likely to make connections with others and with nature, and to be more attuned to their spiritual or religious beliefs. A person’s spiritual health – sense of belonging, meaning and purpose in life – is enhanced by being physically active.
