Background and goals Basis
In infrastructure projects management of total process and its components is currently unsatisfying (e.g. feedback from clients) Implementation of data model in infrastructure management will change significantly design process and its deliverables, which promotes need for process development Process development will improve productivity and efficiency, support establishment of good customer relationships and create new business and competitiveness Client organisations will require utilisation of data models in the near future Goals for the development project Description of infrastructure management process covering all phases through out life cycle in data model based operating environment. Determination of input and output data in different process phases and impact of data model based information management to operations of different parties Jouko Kankainen

What is a data model? Geometry model Structural model
Describes the end product in 3D -model Features have attributes and parameters, which define the end product Structural model Describes the product in structures The structures include intelligence (e.g. component properties and substance), that is property information Information model Includes more detailed information than geometry and structural models Various types of information (e.g. quality requirements, normative consumption, cost information) Jouko Kankainen

Project stages A new infrastructure management process is created for basis of the project. The new process described will apply data model based information covering entire life cycle Needs for process development and changes are surveyed through expert interviews and workshops, where all different parties are involves (clients, companies of supplier network, organisations developing the data model). The interviews and workshops serve for investigation of how the processes of different parties will change in design, calculation, production, and maintenance planning what information is needed as basis for different process components and what output information they deliver how the total process will change, when input data is different from the current data International experiences how implementing data model has influenced process management and needs to change it are looked into. Experiences in Norway (especially geometry model) and U.S Stanford and CIFE (information model) are in focus The total process (next slide) is investigated in 2-3 different infrastructure projects. The feasibility of process models is tested in interaction with industry. Jouko Kankainen

Project deliverables The main delivery of the project is the new infrastructure management process, which describes the future operation and performance in different process components information flows (input and output data) the benefits data model is offering to different organisations (e.g. less mistakes, input data is easier available, time savings, integration of design and building) requirements and challenges of implementing the data model (e.g. knowledge, company-based development of operations, IT-investments) need for new knowledge and services The process description will cover the total life cycle of an infrastructure object from acquiring input data to final disposal. Project deliverables support the achieving the goals of Infra 2010-program and they will by implemented gradually throug piloting. Project deliverables offer a platform for development and supply of new services. Information management and programs for tailored data applications require special expertise (e.g. timetable management, data model upkeep). Jouko Kankainen

Why is the project needed?
With out process development the implementation and profitability of data model investments remains low Client organisations will require applying of data model. Implementation of data model requires development activities in the individual companies. The project helps companies in identifying development needs and promoting development actions Those organisations, which go in the front line in applying data model, get the first mover advantage and gain most for their business Process development improves productivity, supports establishment of good customer relationships and creates new business opportunities Development needs cover improvement of total process in infrastructure management (both investments and maintenance) and adjustment of process components integration development of processes in individual organisations creation of new knowledge either for client organisations, designers, contractors or new service providers The project is an important part in Infra 2010-program and necessary for achieving program goals.
