1 College and Career Ready Standards Implementation Teams November 2014
Staying the Course! Welcome to the 2nd quarterly CCRS Implementation Team Meetings of year 3! Is there anyone new joining us today (ask to raise their hands). As you know, the SDE has committed to you that we will focus on implementation of the standards for our professional learning. You have provided great feedback and input into the design of these meetings. But, it is only successful if it makes it back to the classroom teachers who are with our students everyday. That is your role as an implementation team. So, we hope that your time together today will allow you to revisit your plan for implementation to ensure teachers in your systems have an opportunity to continue to learn. Today will be a little different. We don’t have a video from Dr. Bice, so we hope to get you to your team planning sessions early so you have time doing what is important – evaluating where you are with implementation of the standards and planning forward. Notice our commitment to “Stay the Course” – we honestly believe that the answers to our questions and the solutions to our challenges lie within – within our faculties, within our systems, within our regions, within our state. So, as we “Stay the Course” – and face challenges of implementation, let’s look within. College and Career Ready Standards Implementation Teams November 2014

2 CCRS 2014-2015 Instructional Focus Areas
Relevant Learning Formative Assessment Special Populations You told us through survey feedback what you wanted to spend time on. So, we are committed to focusing on these things this year. Relevant Learning: We will continue to focus on how we make learning relevant to today’s students. Formative Assessment: The system of formative assessment that happens during the day to day instruction that allows for differentiation and response to student needs during instruction is a priority in all content sessions. Special Populations: Teachers have shared that they are not as comfortable implementing the standards to special populations…specifically EL students and Students with Disabilities.

3 Characteristics of Assessment
Summative Assessment (Assessment OF Learning) Formative Assessment (Assessment FOR Learning) Purpose: To improve instruction and provide feedback Occurs during instruction while learning is in progress – day to day, minute by minute Focused on checking for understanding and the learning progress Promotes self monitoring Collaborative Fluid – an ongoing process Use of evidence to make adjustments for continual improvement Purpose: To measure competency Occurs after instruction – end of unit or course test Focused on the products of learning Measurement against externally determined criteria Directed Rigid – an unchanging measure Use of results to determine success or failure So, let’s talk just a minute about formative assessments. We know you recently received ACT reports. District and school folks have been really digging into these results. Did anyone attend the Curriculum and Instruction meetings last week? If you did, you know that although there was an emphasis on summative assessments, we know that what really makes a difference in classrooms is formative assessments. Take a minute to look at the chart above. This is from Moss and Brookhart Advancing Formative Assessment in Every Classroom. Summative vs. Formative Assessment - One is not better than the other – they are different based on the purpose. However, we have done a pretty good job of summative assessments (autopsy) and often do not use formative measures (check up) as readily. So, as we go forward today, let’s really thing about the impact formative assessments have on student learning.

4 Concluding Conversations
What have you learned so far about the following? Co-creating lessons, co-creating assessments, and looking at student work Formative Assessment Instruction for Special Populations What is the most valuable learning from today’s session that you will share with other teachers? In each of your content sessions today, your facilitators will conclude with the information you see on this slide. We are committed to using formative assessment as well and will use the feedback you provide to improve these sessions to meet your needs.

5 CCRS PLU PLUACLD312 Important Note:
The PLU for CCRS Implementation Teams has been approved. Remember, you have to register prior to the last Implementation Team meeting in order to get credit. This year, we hope you’ll take time to reflect on your implementation using the progress and capacity rubric. Also, everyone probably needs to revisit their PD plan and revise it to reflect your district’s needs. After you have completed your revisions, please send an electronic copy to Lori Boyd by November 14th. Looking at these resources may be a good place for you to begin with your teams this morning. Important Note: Please send a revised CCRS PD plan to by November 14th.

6 CCRS Implementation Team Survey Survey Monkey
Please take time to complete the survey. This gives us important information about the overall content, facilities, and presenters.

7 Staying the Course! So if we say it enough and remind each other…maybe we can hold each other accountable for “Staying the Course!”. You should have a schedule with room assignments. You will go from here to Team Time. Enjoy your day!
