Act III Scene iv: Another Plot Twist

Setting—The Capulet house
Think back to the beginning of the play. What was going on with Romeo and Juliet romantically? Paris comes to the house to see Juliet. Why? Capulet tells him that he has not had the chance to discuss marriage with Juliet since Tybalt’s death has occurred so suddenly. Paris realizes this, and he asks Capulet to give Juliet his condolences. WHAT DOES THIS PART OF THE SCENE REVEAL ABOUT PARIS?
8
Scene iv Continued As Paris turns to leave, but Capulet calls Paris back and tells him that he will arrange for Juliet and Paris to marry on Thursday (it is currently Monday). Capulet says the wedding will be small (about half a dozen people will be invited) as he does not want anyone to think that the family is not taking Tybat’s death seriously. Capulet asks Lady Capulet to tell Juliet the good news before she goes to bed. HOW IS DRAMATIC IRONY PLAYING A PART HERE?

Homework We’ve been working a lot on characterization as we have read Romeo & Juliet. Go to pages in your purple guidebook. Fill in the chart based on our reading of Act 3 to this point. On the back, write a few sentences explaining what TYPE of characterization Shakespeare is using in this section of the text— direct or indirect. Use evidence from the text to support your answer and determine what specific aspect of the STEAL method is being used if you identify indirect characterization in the text. This assignment will be due at the beginning of the period tomorrow.
