Presentation on theme: "Separation of Mixtures"— Presentation transcript:

1 Separation of Mixtures

2 Evaluation/Assessment:
Objective: Today I will be able to: Explain how filtration, distillation, crystallization, and chromatography are used to separate solutions into their components Analyze how detergents separate stains from clothing Evaluation/Assessment: Informal assessment: Listening to student interactions as they gather information about the separation of mixtures. Responding to student questions Formal assessment: Analyzing student responses to the chart and exit ticket. Common Core Connection Build Strong Content Knowledge Reason abstractly and quantitatively Use appropriate tools strategically

3 Lesson Sequence Evaluate: Warm – Up
Engage and Explore: Separation of Mixtures Chart (15 minutes) Explain: Separation of Mixtures Notes Elaborate: Stain removal article and questions Evaluate: Exit Ticket

4 Warm - Up What are some different methods (4 total) of separating mixtures? What is filtration? What 2 states of matter are separated during filtration?

5 Objective Today I will be able to:
Apply knowledge of molarity, molality, mole fraction and dilutions on a quiz Explain how filtration, distillation, crystallization, and chromatography are used to separate solutions into their components Analyze how detergents separate stains from clothing

6 Homework Finish answering the questions for the article

7 Agenda Warm-Up Separation of Mixtures Chart
Separation of Mixtures Notes Stain Remover Article and Questions Exit Ticket

8 Separation of Mixtures Chart
Work in groups of 4 Each person will be responsible for reading about one type of separation and filling in the chart Once you have completed your section, share with your group members If you have questions ask Mr. Klotz 15 minutes to complete this section

9 Separation of Mixtures Notes
Fill in any gaps on your charts as we review the following notes together

10 Filtration Used to collect solid particles on a filter
Works for heterogeneous mixtures containing a solid phase Gravity allows for separation Example Sand and Water

11 Distillation a pure liquid is recovered from a mixed solution
Two types Simple Distillation – Salt Water Fractional Distillation – Ethanol and Water Effective because of different boiling points

12 Distillation Apparatus

13 Crystallization A compound is heated and cooled down to produce crystals Solubility Salt Crystals

14 Chromatography – Think back to Biology

15 Chromatography Separate mixtures using absorbent paper Process:
Solution to be separated is placed on dry filter paper A solvent is added and allows the solution to travel up the paper Works due to capillary action

16 Read the article about stain removal and answer the questions
Whatever is not completed in class will become your homework

17 Exit Ticket Brainstorm a list of real-life applications for each type of separation: Filtration Distillation Crystallization Chromatography
