1 Quirky Quotations

2 When to Use Quotations Around what is said by you or someone else. (dialogue) Around famous sayings (“Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get,” said Forrest.) Around the titles of short works TV, poem, songs, chapter titles, etc. “Grey’s Anatomy”) NOT Movie and Book titles (Forrest Gump)

3 Rules for Dialogue “Run, Forrest, Run!” said Jenny.
New speaker = new line Quotation marks “___” go around WHAT IS SAID The end punctuation goes inside the quotation marks. A comma always goes before a quotation. “Run, Forrest, Run!” said Jenny. Forrest answered, “Okay, Jenny.”

4 said Please don’t bore me.

5 Etc. Instead, try…. bellowed roared breathed hissed muttered Snapped
grumbled snickered insisted chuckled whispered repeated sneered mouthed

6 4 types of Quotations Descriptor = the he said/she said part
Quote at Beginning Quote at End Quote in the Middle Descriptor in the Middle “I love you,” Forrest said. Forrest said, “I love you.” Forrest said, “I love you,” while eating a chocolate. “I love you,” Forrest said, “and I always will.” 4 types of Quotations

7 Quote within a quote When there is a quote within a quote, you use single quotation marks (‘’). “Jenny said, ‘I love you, Forest’ to me,” Forrest explained to his mama. It may be rare, but it does happen!!

8 “That’s all I have to say about that,” said Forrest.

9 Your Mission: *Whether you choose to accept it or not…
Work with a partner to write a conversation between two characters from stories we have read. Each person should use a different writing utensil AND write your name on your paper to turn in IN YOUR UTENSIL. I expect to see BOTH partners’ writing on the conversation. Choose 2 characters – only 2 – from DIFFERENT stories we have read. (“Broken Chain,” “Eleven,” “The Lottery,” “Charles,” The Outsiders) Spend 3 minutes thinking about all you know about those characters. Decide what situation your characters will be in when they meet and talk. Use all the rules you just learned about quotes to write a conversation! Your dialogue should include AT LEAST 3 lines from each character.
