Government back in the day (800years ago)
King and Church Nobles, Knights Merchants, Freemen, Farmers Peasants, serfs, slaves Kings were the sole authority!-Absolute monarch Controlled Everything Belief that king’s power came from God No one could take power or question king’s ideas

What made the change happen?
King John did not care about violating the rights of his people He taxed them a lot! He put them in jail for no reason He took their land He killed people The nobles get fed up!

Magna Carta Create 1215 Document created by the nobles (RICH PEEPS)
They were upset that the king was violating their rights High taxes Taking their land Putting them in jail for no reason King John is forced to sign it or deal with a war (civil war) Why was the Magna Carta so important? Magna Carta had put into place a few new laws the king had to follow
Property was protected People couldn’t be placed in jail with out being charged The king had to ask permission to raise taxes Who did the king have to ask permission from???? A council (group) of nobles –later called Parliament

English Bill of Rights Magna carta was the first step to protecting rights, but more protection was needed The king didn’t always follow the Magna Carta or listen to Parliament (elected people) The English Nobles went to war with King James II (1688)

English Bill of Rights 1689 Parliament didn’t want the king to ever have enough power to violate their rights again Created the English Bill of Rights --Document protecting the rights of the people It took almost all the power away from the king The king had to ask permission to do anything Listed more rights that were protected by the government No excessive (high) fines No cruel and unusual punishment
