Introduction to the Endocrine system and Hormones
By: Kimberly Pang
2
Endocrine System Endocrine system is a body control system composed of a group of glands that maintain a stable condition within the body’s internal environment by producing chemical regulatory substances called hormones
4
Hormones Hormones are chemical messengers secreted by endocrine glands
They transported to the target cells in the bloodstream. Hormones produced by cells in one part of the body can affect cells in another part of the body. Each target cell contains receptor proteins; it receives and responds to the chemical message sent by the hormone. Hormones regulate various human functions, including metabolism, body’s growth and development, tissue function, emotion, and sexual development and function
6
Along with the nervous system, the endocrine system provides integration and control of the organs and tissues. The endocrine glands are the pituitary, pineal, thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands The tissues and organs that secrete hormones are the hypothalamus, thymus, pancreas, testes (male), and ovaries (female).
