1 Mind Stretcher Write one sentence that uses the following 3 key terms: Prokaryote, nucleus and eukaryote EX: Eukarotic cells have DNA contained in a nucleus, while prokaryotic cells have DNA that floats freely in the cell.

2 Directions Silently read “Facts about Cells.” You may write on the sheet. You will keep the reading passage and turn in the questions/scantron sheet to me when finished. Suggestion: Underline/highlight the answer to each question in the passage!

3 These Cell Books will STAY in CLASS!!
Cell Booklet Setup These Cell Books will STAY in CLASS!! On the inside of the first page, WRITE animal cell as the title. On Page 2, above the rectangular plant cell, WRITE plant cell as the title. Write your first and last name on the FRONT COVER of the booklet and give it a title! On the next page (top left side of p. 3), label the organelle: Cell Membrane Label the bottom organelle on p. 3: Cytoplasm

4 Cell Booklet Analogy Organelle: ____________
Function: ____________________________________ Analogy: The (insert organelle) is like a ( ) because the (organelle)&(function) just like the ( ) does….. Ex: The cell membrane is like a fence because a cell membrane lets things in and out of a cell just like a fence lets things in and out of a cell.

5 Did You Know? We are made up of microscopic living things called: CELLS There are Approximately 100 TRILLION cells in the Human Body. 100 Trillion

6 The Organelles CELLS are made up of different parts called ORGANELLES.
Each one has a specific FUNCTION/job! The Organelles: Nucleus Mitochondria Cytoplasm Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosomes Golgi Bodies (Apparatus) Vacuoles Lysosomes Cell Membrane Cell Wall Chloroplast

7 Organelle- Cell Membrane
Function- To protect the cell and allow things IN and OUT. Analogy- The cell membrane is like a fence because a cell membrane lets things in and out of a cell just like a fence lets things in and out of a yard. Found- Animal & Plant Cells

9 Cytoplasm Organelle- Cytoplasm
Function- Gel-like fluid found all throughout the cell; All other organelles are suspended (floating) in it. Analogy- The Cytoplasm is like Jell-O, constantly moving & swishing around holding fruit (or organelles) in place Found- Plant & Animal Cells

10 Cyto + Plasm = Cell Shape
Cytoplasm Means… Cyto = Cells Plasm= Shape Cyto + Plasm = Cell Shape

11 FYI: Cytoplasm Cytoplasm is basically the thick gel like substance that fills the cell sometimes called cytosol. It helps move materials around the cell. It contains enzymes, fatty acids, sugars, and amino acids that are used to keep the cell working.

12 The Nucleus Function- DNA (our genes) is in the nucleus. It directs the cell’s activities. The nucleolus is housed here. (Tells all the other parts what to do! ) Analogy- The nucleus is like a Brain Found- Animal & Plant Cells

13 Found INSIDE the Nucleus!
Nucleolus Found INSIDE the Nucleus!

14 Mitochondria Function- Performs cellular respiration which breaks down sugar to produce energy! (In the form of ATP) Analogy- “Power plant” of the Cell Found- Animal & Plant Cells

15 FYI: Mitochondria They are very small and cells may contain several thousand of them. It all depends on the cells needs. If the cell feels it is not getting enough energy, than more can be created. Food such as glucose (sugar) is broken down into carbon dioxide and water which releases energy. (Cellular Respiration!) We breathe in oxygen to help this process.

16 Where are the Mitochondria??

17 What does it look like on the inside?

18

19 Ribosomes Function- Makes protein out of amino acid. All cells need protein to function! Analogy- Ribosomes are like a Protein Factory Found- Animal & Plant Cells

20 Where are Ribosomes located?

21 Video Clip Intro- Biology: Cell Structure

22 Cell Booklet Today: Nucleus & Mitochondria
Organelle: ____________ Function: Analogy: The (insert organelle) is like a (different part/thing of your choice) because the (organelle)&(function) just like the (part/thing) does (insert its function.) Fill out information first, then draw and color a nucleus and mitochondria to match the ones you glued onto your animal and plant cell.

23 Mind Stretcher – Copy bold
Which organelle is large in plants and stores water and other materials? Which organelle digests food particles, wastes, cell parts, and foreign invaders? Which organelle hooks amino acids together to make proteins? Vacuole Lysosome Ribosomes

24 Mind Stretcher – Copy bold
Which organelle is large in plants and stores water and other materials? Which organelle digests food particles, wastes, cell parts, and foreign invaders? Which organelle hooks amino acids together to make proteins? Vacuole Lysosome Ribosomes

25 Mind Stretcher – Copy underlined
Which organelle breaks down food molecules to make ATP? Which organelle uses the energy of sunlight to make food? Which organelle packages and distributes proteins and other materials out of the cell? Mitochondria Chloroplast Golgi Body

26 When finished with your QUIZZES…
Flip them upside down on the middle of table DRAW a golgi body AND Endoplasmic Reticulum on your animal and plant cell in the booklet You may only cut out these pictures IF you have your own scissors and glue AT YOUR DESK.

27 Cell Booklet Today: Golgi Body & ER
1st- Label top of page 5 with Golgi Body and lower half with Endoplasmic Reticulum 2nd- Using the notes on your table, fill in the FUNCTION for each organelle. 3rd- Write a descriptive analogy for each organelle. You MUST explain WHY they go together. 4th- DRAW the cell organelle in the plant and animal cell on page 1 & 2 of your booklet and LABEL them. (*You are no longer cutting and gluing unless you have your own supplies) 5th- DRAW the organelles on page 5 as well (Color them for HW…unless you have your own colored pencils already in your possession) 6th- STUDY or work on VOCAB silently if you are finished.

28 Golgi Body or Golgi Complex
FUNCTION: The Golgi Body takes the proteins sent by the ER, modifies them, and repackages them back into vesicles and distributes them to other organelles or outside the cell.

29 Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
FUNCTION- Carries/Delivers Proteins and other cell materials from one part of cell to another Two Types: Smooth and Rough Rough E.R. has Ribosomes Smooth E.R. does NOT have Ribosomes! In Latin, this means: Endo= “inside” Reticulum= “little net”

30 Mind Stretcher - What types of cells differentiate to become specialized? Cells of multi-cellular organisms Prokaryotic cells Cells of unicellular organisms What would most likely happen if a cell’s mitochondria were not functioning properly? The cells would use lysosomes to release energy The cell’s level of ATP would decrease. The cell’s level of sugar would decrease. Which of the following would you NOT find in a bacteria cell? DNA Nucleus Cytoplasm

31 Cell Booklet Today: Ribosome & Lysosome
**No one is allowed out of their seat AT ALL… NO FOOD/SNACKS. BOOKLETS are graded Monday! 1st- Label top of page ____ with Ribosome and lower half with Lysosome 2nd- Fill in the FUNCTION for each organelle as Mrs. Wise shows it on the screen. 3rd- Write a descriptive analogy for each organelle. You MUST explain WHY they go together. 4th- DRAW the cell organelle in the plant and animal cell on page 1 & 2 of your booklet and LABEL them. (*You are no longer cutting and gluing unless you have your own supplies) 5th- DRAW the organelles on page _____ as well (Color them for HW…unless you have your own colored pencils already in your possession) 6th- STUDY or work on VOCAB silently if you are finished.

32 Ribosome FUNCTION- Creates protein for the cell

33 Lysosome FUNCTION: Breaks down waste material and debris
They digest excess or worn out organelles, food particles, and engulf viruses or bacteria. Video

34 “Who am I?” Mind Stretcher- Copy
Found only in plant cells, I'm green as can be. I make food for the plant Using the sun's energy Who am I? Answer on back of page: __________________ Chloroplast

35 Mind Stretcher - Chloroplasts, Cell Wall, Large Vacuoles Cellulose
1. What does semi-permeable mean? What organelle is semi-permeable? 2. Name an organelle that plants have but animals do not. 3. What are the cell walls of plants made of? Let’s only SOME things pass through; Cell membrane Chloroplasts, Cell Wall, Large Vacuoles Cellulose
