3 Tools for Solving Problems Textbook page 183-185
According to the The Road Less Traveled written by: Dr. M. Scott Peck, there are four tools or techniques for solving problems: 1. Delayed gratification 2. Accepting responsibility 3. Dedication to truth or reality 4. Balance

4 1. Delayed Gratification
How Do I Get It? 1. Delayed Gratification Is difficult because the rewards of living only for the moment are more tangible. As you learn to delay gratification – put off the temporary joys of today in favor of lasting rewards in the future – you will be acquiring an important tool in solving problems.

5 2. Accepting Responsibility
How Do I Get It? 2. Accepting Responsibility Passing the blame is not effective in solving problems. When the problem is yours so is the responsibility to solve it. Taking responsibility also gives you the opportunity to choose. You are responsible to becoming the person you want to be! Do not do something you feel is not truly you or not something you want to become. You can just say no!

6 3. Dedication to Truth or Reality
How Do I Get It? 3. Dedication to Truth or Reality Wishful thinking…. has not been shown to be an effective way to solve problems. For example, we still see ads proclaiming that you can lose weight painlessly, or make a million dollars at home in your spare time.

7 How Do I Get It? 4. Balance Problem solving requires balancing, which leads to being flexible. According to Dr. Peck, balancing is “the type of discipline required to discipline discipline.” In other words, there are times when you shouldn’t delay gratification. It is important to live happy in the moment As long as you aren’t being self-destructive by doing so!
