You will need to supply your own calculators for this course---you will need either a TI-82 or a TI-84 graphing calculator
2
If you are on the free or reduced lunch program there is a program through the school that you can borrow a calculator--please talk to me privately if this is the case
3
Class work P. 9 (4-40 even) and P. 15 (3-15 odd)
4
Order of Operations Four basic operations addition subtraction
multiplication division
5
Factors When two or more numbers are multiplied to give a certain product each number is called a factor of the product 8 x 2 = 16 some of the factors of 16 are 2 and 8
6
Prime numbers A whole number greater than 1 that has no whole number factors Examples 2, 3, 5, 7, 11...
7
Bases, Exponents, Powers
5 2 = 25 Power Base
8
Finding answers to problems that have more than one operation
PEMDAS (going left to right) P = parentheses () E = exponents M = multiply D = divide A = add S = subtract
9
Properties of Operations
10
Closure Addition Sum of two real numbers is a real number
A+ B = a real number 2+3=5 Multiplication Product of two real numbers is a real number A x B = real number 3x 4 = 12
11
Commutative Addition You can change the order in which two real numbers are added and get the same answer 2+3 = 3+2 Multiplication You can change the order in which two real numbers are added and get the same answer 4x 3 = 3x4
12
Associative Addition You can change the order in which you add three real numbers (a+b) + c = a + (b+c) Multiplication You can change the order in which you multiply three real numbers (a x b) x c = a x (b x c)
13
Identity (The mirror property)
Addition When zero (0) is added by a real number the answer will be that real number Multiplication When one (1) is multiplies by a real number the answer will be that real number
14
Inverse Addition For every real number there exists a real negative number A + -A = 0 = 0 = 0 Multiplication For every real number a is not equal to zero there exists a real fraction (1/a) such that when it is multiplied equals 1 (1/a) * (a) = 1 (4) * (1/4) = 1
15
Distributive Property
Combines operations of multiplication and addition, multiplication over addition A * (B+C) = AB + AC 5(2+ x) = 5(2) + 5(x)
16
Multiplication Property of Zero
For all real numbers multiplied by zero, the answer will be zero AB = 0, if and only if A=0 or B=0 3(0) = 0
17
Homework P. 43 (3-9 and 12-20) P. 53 (5-31 odd)
