4. Propaganda - an extreme form of "BIAS"
Bias: Favoring one group or point of view over another 
Example: Cherries are the best fruit. No, you are wrong – bananas are better.

5. Intellectual Colonialism – Propaganda
Definition – messages that deliberately promote a biased point of view, often distorting facts and truth
Propaganda can be posters, cartoons, images and all forms of communication
All governments and groups that seek control use propaganda

6. Intellectual Colonialism
When a government or powerful group (the colonizer), uses media to influence and control the ideas and thinking of the people they have been colonizing.  Ideas are the colonizers and the brain is the place being colonized.  The goal is to make the targeted group think the thoughts that the powerful group wants them to think.
Why would governments want to do this?
These ideas come in the form of propaganda/advertising, political cartoons, literature, poetry, radio, television, movies and internet based websites and applications.

Colonial rulers used images to control the thinking of people in the “home country” and in the colony or region of the world they controlled.
Take a look at the image on the right hand side of this slide.
This is the Royal Seal of the Massachusetts Bay Colony which was settled by the English in about 1620.
In your notes write down what you notice about the seal:
Draw an inference 
Who is the target audience of the seal? 
What is the message of the seal?
What is the purpose of the seal
What is the evidence in the seal that you are using to make your inference?

White Man’s Burden vs. Black Man’s Burden
In small groups, you will read one of the two poems.  You will follow a process and become and expert on the poem.
Then you will pair up with another student who read the other poem.  The two of you will then read and discuss each other’s poem.
The two of you will create a Venn diagram or T Chart that compares and contrasts the following parts of the poem:
