1 LT- I can analyze a text for evidence that is supportive and valuable to my claim.
SC- I can collect and explain evidence from texts that support my belief about the government and its involvement in internet privacy.

2 Do Now 12/14 Provide three sentences of commentary
This prediction can be done as a journal or writer’s notebook entry.

3 Recall: What is “Authorizing” evidence?
What is “illustrating” evidence? What is “Countering” evidence? What is commentary?

4 Claim: The government should do more to protect my privacy.
Illustrating Evidence: “There is no limit to what types of information that can be collected, how long it can be retained, with whom it can be shared, and how it can be used.” Commentary (commenting on the evidence and how it connects to the claim): How can we as a society be ok with the government not putting into place any regulations? It is the job of the government to protect its people, and they are clearly dropping the ball in this area. People should feel safe using the internet and that is not the case when there are not limits, laws, or regulations put on the internet.

5 Claim: The government should NOT do more to protect my online privacy?
Illustrating Evidence: “You drive on streets tracked by security cameras and your cell phone emits signals providing your location.” Commentary (commenting on the evidence and how it connects to the claim): Clearly, the government is already doing enough to protect us. Do we really want them getting more involved in our daily lives. Companies should be help accountable to make sure they are keeping our privacy protected, but the getting the government even more involved is not the answer.

Claim: Source (Title and author) The text says: (Evidence) I say (Commentary- 2-3 sentences) Illustrating Authorizing Countering These four strategies are described by Joseph Harris (2006) in Rewriting: How to Do Things With Texts. We have discussed the compelling evidence in the paired reading and “Save the Last Word” activities in order to prepare for commenting on the evidence. We also noted when we recorded the evidence what might make the source seem credible. Now we’re formalizing this work by pulling it together in short passages that will eventually find their way into our drafts.
