(A) Valentin Häcker's 1892 diagram of the stem cell in the Cyclops embryo. According to Häcker, the stem cell (st) has just migrated to the inside of the embryo and is about to undergo asymmetric cell division. One daughter cell will give rise to the germline; the other will give rise to mesodermal tissue. (B) Artur Pappenheim's view of hematopoiesis from The cell in the center is the hypothesized common progenitor of the entire blood system.
