Reduce… Re-use… Recycle.
Working with NISP to Reduce Environmental Impact Dave Gill H,S&E Manager Welcome & introduction.
2
Overview Our purpose built site produces in excess of 40,000 tonnes of printed paper each year. 18 acre site in Midsomer Norton consisting of 5 factories & warehouse. Label facility in Farrington Gurney.
3
Product range including:
A4 sheets. Fan-folded Single Part Forms. Multi Part Data-Mailers. Labels. Transactional Print. Security Products. Laser Reels. Huge growth in reels last 10 years – now account for 25% of business.
4
Presentation of Laser Reels
Cardboard cores are used to support and protect the printed reels during transit. A total of 24,000 were used in 2009 – that’s tonnes. Use of cores x 2 per pallet. Current source = reuse some of our own, buy in the rest.
5
The Challenge To reduce the number of cores purchased and reduce cost.
After contacting NISP a possible solution was explored. First joined NISP in Met Vish earlier this year. Discussed cores, 1st contact made within two weeks.
6
The Symbiosis Three producers of waste cores identified.
Contacts arranged. Sample cores assessed for suitability. Storage and collection agreements reached. A waste contractor. A carpet sales co. User of stretch wrap.
7
The Result Less raw material use. Reduced cost.
Removal of 15 tonnes used cardboard from landfill. 7,500 cores = 15 tonnes.
8
More Good News… We also collect the used cores from our customers so they can be re-used time and again until finally going for recycling.
9
Summary With help from NISP we’ve been able to:
REDUCE the amount of raw material purchased. RE-USE unwanted waste streams from third parties. RECYCLE at end of life. Also reducing packaging waste obligation.
