Setting the course – the 1970s.
First contact between four groups of scientists active in implant dentistry and Institut Straumann in Waldenburg Prof. André Schroeder, University of Bern, Switzerland Dr. Philipp Ledermann, Herzogenbuchsee, Switzerland Prof. Wilfried Schilli, Dr. Herbert Niederdellmann and Dr. Gisbert Krekeler, University of Freiburg, Germany Prof. Jakob Wirz, University of Zurich, Switzerland Productive collaboration in terms of theory and practice

The founding years – the 1980s.
Establishment of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) as an association 12 founding members under the leadership of Prof. André Schroeder and Dr. h.c. Fritz Straumann Purpose: to advance research and development in implant dentistry Mission: to promote and disseminate knowledge on all aspects of implant dentistry through research, development and education to the benefit of the patient A technical committee as the ITI’s only official body; main activity: development of implants Prof. André Schroeder, Switzerland, elected ITI President

1988 Establishment of the ITI Foundation by Fritz Straumann and André Schroeder 1st ITI Symposium in Basel, Switzerland A financial basis for impartial research in implant dentistry Allocation of 51% of the foundation's budget to research funding

1991 Prof. Wilfried Schilli, Germany, elected ITI President
