1 Setting up your lab notebook

2 First, two biggies You will always use pen (blue, black or another DARK color). You will only write on the fronts of the pages. This is the question that your experiment answers

3 First Page in the Spiral
Your title page. Center the following information Your name Class name and period Teacher name John Doe Pre-AP Chemistry – 5 Mrs. Francis

4 Second Page in the Spiral
Your Table of Contents. To be updated through out the school year as we add more labs. Table of Contents 1. Observing a Chemical Reaction. p.1-

5 Page 3 and beyond 1 Number the upper right hand corner number 1 (yes, I know it’s page 3…it’s now number 1) Then number the FRONTS of each page in the upper right hand corner consecutively until you get to the end of the spiral. Summarize your research in three to five points.

6 Set up for every lab For each lab you will have the following sections (unless they’ve been specially omitted by me.) Title Purpose Reactions Procedure Data Observations Calculations Error Conclusion Summarize your research in three to five points.

7 Here’s what our first lab will look like.
1 Go to weebly and get the pdf of our current lab. First thing, date the page in the upper right. Now put the title. Observing a Chemical Reaction 9/4/18 Summarize your research in three to five points.

8 Purpose 1 Now put the purpose (or objectives for the lab) Please label as “purpose”. Note: I am going to give you the beginning. YOU will need to look at the lab and complete each section. The lab is at ly.com/pre-ap-chemistry.html Observing a Chemical Reaction 9/4/18 Purpose: To learn how qualitative and quantitative…. Summarize your research in three to five points.

9 Chemical Reaction 1 Now put the chemical reaction (since you don’t know chemistry yet, I will give this to you). Please label as “reaction”. Observing a Chemical Reaction 9/4/18 Purpose: To learn how qualitative and quantitative…. Reaction: 2 Al CuCl2  3 Cu + 2 AlCl3 Summarize your research in three to five points.

10 Procedure 1 Copy down the procedure. Word for word (you may abbreviate). Maintain the numbered steps as written. This will probably take the rest of the first page to finish all steps. If you need more space continue on the front of the next page. Observing a Chemical Reaction 9/4/18 Purpose: To learn how qualitative and quantitative…. Reaction: 2 Al CuCl2  3 Cu + 2 AlCl3 Procedure: 1.Obtain and describe a sample of copper (II) chloride dihydrate. CuCl . 2H2O crystals. 2. Fill 100 mL beaker about one fourth filled with distilled water. Without stirring add 1 level teaspoon full of crystals…. ………………………………………………………… Summarize your research in three to five points.

11 Data and Observations 2 For THIS lab the data and observations can go together. Normally they are separate. For THIS lab, make the data table take up a WHOLE page. Leave the observations blank UNTIL we do the lab. Data is measurements (numbers) and Observations are what you see, smell, hear, etc. Don’t forget to date (and number) the 2nd page Data and Observations 9/4/18 System Observation dry copper(II) chloride dihydrate copper(II) chloride in water stirred copper(Il) chloride in water copper(lI) chloride solution plus aluminum foil initial temperature final temperature Summarize your research in three to five points.

12 Calculations 3 For THIS lab we do not have any calculations, so we will skip this section. No need to label. When you do have calculations, you will show the formula, the mathematical set-up and answer. All with appropriate units and significant figures. 9/4/18 Summarize your research in three to five points.

13 Error 3 This section is to be completed after the lab. I will give more information in class. Here you will describe experimental error that could of have occurred AND what effect it has on your final answers. Give two sources of error. This is not a confessional. NO FIRST PERSON NARRATIVE. Write in passive voice. 9/4/18 Error: Summarize your research in three to five points.

14 Conclusion 3 This section is to be completed after the lab. I will give more information in class. Here you will restate the purpose and tell how you fulfilled the purpose. If you were searching for an answer, then you would tell the answer here. Focus on NEW vocab or skills acquired in the lab. NO FIRST PERSON NARRATIVE. Write in passive voice. 9/4/18 Error: One source of error in this lab is when ………………………………………………………………………………… Conclusion: The purpose of this lab was to ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Summarize your research in three to five points.

15 Other general up keep. NEVER tear out pages out of your spiral.
1 NEVER tear out pages out of your spiral. But I messed up! So what. Fix with single lines to cross out mistakes. Example If large areas are messed up, use a large neat X. Example No “naked” numbers. ALL numbers should have a unit. Observing a Chemical Reaction 9/4/18 Purpose: To learn how qualtatlae qualitative and quantitative…. Reaction: 2 Al CuCl2  3 Cu + 2 AlCl3 Procedure: 1.asflhalksfhlkasfhkjshakfhaksdfjhkajshdflkajsfhksjahfl. 2. asfljhlkajsfdhlkjasfhlkjhasfObtain and describe a sample of copper 3.aruyweiryuqwiruyqwoiuryqoiwruyoqiwuryoqiwueyr………………………………………………………… 1.Obtain and describe a sample of copper (II) chloride dihydrate. CuCl . 2H2O crystals. 2. Fill 100 mL beaker about one fourth filled with distilled water. Without stirring add 1 level teaspoon full of crystals…. Summarize your research in three to five points.
