Go Geography! #46 - Reviewing India/Predicting China…
3 CEV’s What are some of the main negatives that India faces with the task of becoming an industrialized nation? What type of similar issues do you think China may be facing? Explain why.
15
Industrial China: The Three Gorges Dam
How has industrialization been affecting China in recent years? China's Enormous Three Gorges Dam Could End Up Being A Huge Mistake After reviewing the article, discuss the information with your shoulder partner and record/answer the following questions: What is the Three Gorges Dam? How and why is the dam significant? What do you think are the Top 10 most important pieces of information about the dam from the article?
16
Industrial China: The Three Gorges Dam
Mr. Glueck’s Top 10: 10 - The project took more than a decade to complete. 9 - While official estimates put the cost of production at $23 billion, international experts believe it cost more than double that. 8 - It's intended to stop the frequent flooding in the region. 7 - 1,300 archaeological sites have also been submerged. 6 - The project also increased the amount of cargo transported across the river to 50 million tons, triple the maximum annual amount prior to the dam's construction. 5 - The dam may have exacerbated China's 2011 drought, in addition to stranding ships and causing central and eastern China to face a power shortage. 4 - Environmentalists say the reservoir is accumulating silt and waste from cities and industries. 3 - It serves a purpose, however — The dam generates more than 18,000 MW of power a year 2 - The number of landslides and other natural disasters has increased by 70 percent since the reservoir filled up in 2010. 1 - But China still wants to build more dams!
17
Air Pollution in China…
“Smog Journeys” As you watch the video, record any images that stand out to you, as well as what you believe the intended message of the video may be… What did the piece suggest about the pollution in China? What does the director believe… Chinese director Jia Zhangke has a history of making films with a social message and has previously been censored by the Chinese government for his work. In this film he tackles the air quality crisis which has seen particulate pollution at levels 20 times WHO safety limits in Beijing and other cities. "The one thing that fascinated and shocked me the most was the fact that even on smoggy days, people still lived their lives as usual," he said of the new short film.
18
Fixing the Environment: Creative Solution!
Imagine you are a creative artist that has just been inspired to act because of the environmental issues in China! You are going to create a piece of work titled “Fixing China!” Your piece could be a poem, song, letter, cartoon, etc. Your main focus should be on ways that the environment could be fixed in the country of China, as well as why you believe the environmental problems should be fixed in China! FYI, President of China: President Xi Jinping

We will learn… To explain the correlation between population density and standard of living To explain how high population densities have been affecting the countries within Southeast to East Asia
23
Go Geography! #47 – Population Density Effects on Daily Life…
3 CEV’s Read the following information about how one area of life has been affected by population characteristics in certain places… Rush Hour Subway Usage in Prominent Cities Hamburg, Germany: about 3 passengers/square meter New York, United States: 4 passengers/square meter London, England: about 6 passengers/square meter Paris, France: about 7 passengers/square meter Tokyo, Japan: about 9 passengers/square meter How do you believe this information could affect daily life in these cities? What other areas of life could be affected by high population density in countries like Japan?
24
Population Density in SE Asia…
Some countries in South to East Asia have the highest population densities in the world. Japan is one example of a highly densely populated area. Japan, which is roughly the size of California, has a population about half the size of the United States! ADDITIONALLY, the majority of the population is settled in about 16% of the country.
25
Population Density Examples
Comparing population densities (2017): China 1.38 billion people / about 3.71 million square miles The United States 325 m. ppl/ about 3.6 m. sq. miles Australia 24 m. ppl/ about 3 m. sq. miles Japan 127 m. ppl/ about 146,000 sq. miles Japan’s arable land (land suitable for agriculture): about 18,000 square miles Jumps from about 860 ppl/square mile to 7,000 ppl/square mile!
26
Reading Notes: Population Density and Japan…
Use the map provided and your textbook (map on pg. 445) to answer the preview questions 1-2 for Ch. 31 For sections 31.3 – 31.6, it may be helpful to use a jigsaw method to split up the work in your table groups After each person has completed their part come together and share your information with your group members
27
Population Problems: A Short Story
You are going to write a short story about a character living in an area where population density is a real issue (such as Japan, China, or India)… Your story should include the following terms: Arable land Population distribution Public transit system Pollution Life expectancy Natural resources Underline the terms when they are used. Use Chapter 31 to help with definitions.

31
Reviewing South Asia Tests…
Take a few minutes to discuss missed questions with your table groups members. All scores are final, unless Mr. Glueck did the wrong math. If there is a comment you don’t understand, ask Mr. Glueck. If there is a question that none of your table group members can answer, make note of that then we will discuss that as a class… Class discussion…
32
After reviewing the Test…
Make the following piles: One pile of the South Asian Tests One pile of your answer sheets for the South Asia Tests
