2. Before We Begin…..
Group 1 – Any student who knows almost nothing about China is to stand by the drinking fountain.
Group 2 – Any student who know about 5 things about China and can tell the class about the 5 things. You are to stand by Mr. Mitchell’s desk.
Group 3 – Any student who can tell the class about 10 things about China. You are to stand in the front of the room and be ready to talk about what you know about China.

3. Objective of the Lesson
I want the students to be able to go home and without notes tell their families about China. I want them to tell them 2 things about the physical attributes of China and 3 things that are interesting about China.
State objective: Understand the human and physical characteristics of China

4. What vocabulary should you learn about China?
Superlatives – Words used to talk about China (such as biggest, tallest, longest, hottest, coldest, oldest)
Arable – The ability to grow a crop on.
Beijing – Capital City of China
Shanghai – The largest city of China
Gobi Desert – The 2nd largest Desert in the world. (China and Mongolia)
Himalayas – Highest mountain range in the world
Huang River – Largest river in China
Tibet – A country that is in exile from China
Exile – To not be allowed in.
Traverse – The river winds down the mountain and valleys.
Plateau – A high in elevation flat piece of land.

5. Physical and Political map of China and surrounding countries.
Tell your partner what causes this map to be a political map.

Tell your partner what the three largest border countries to China are.
Answer – Russia, India, and Mongolia

6. Travel across China and you’ll be amazed at the variety of landscapes
West China – enormous mountains and the largest plateau in the world.
Northwest China – Great mountain ranges and desert lands.
East China – The cities and the coastal plains with fertile land.

Himalayas on China’s side. Mountains cover 1/3 of China’s enormous land mass.
As a general in the Chinese army why would you like the Himalayas?
Why do people want to climb the Himalayas?

10. Plateau of Tibet – The “roof of the world”
What would be a reason of why this place is known as the “roof of the world?
Because it is more than 16,000 feet above sea level on the average.
That’s another 2 miles higher than Rexburg.

11. Mount Everest – Highest mountain in the world
Mount Everest – Highest mountain in the world. It’s more than 29,000 feet in elevation. About how many miles in that in elevation?

12. Huang River in China traverses more than 4,000 miles
Give a comparison to the United States. From how far to how far would we have traveled?
Across the US twice

13. Chang River in China traverses 2,900 miles
Is this picture at the beginning or the end of the Huang River?
At the end. Cities such as this are sually close to the oceans.

Most of the desert is in Mongolia.
Made up most of rock and gravel and not sand.
Temperature can be 45 degrees in the day and -45 in the night.
“Gobi” means very large and dry

So hot that rain evaporates before it reaches the ground
