Habitat for Humanity Canada’s Global Village Program brings invaluable support to the communities they visit by giving homeowners an emotional boost through home building projects.

Mission: To mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty.

A Global Village Trip A Trip Involves:
Each Global Village trip is an opportunity for volunteers from around the world to work hand-in-hand with communities in need to eliminate poverty, one house at a time. A Trip Involves: 12-15 Volunteers 9-12 Days (depending on location) 5 Build Days 2 Days of recreational and/or cultural activities

Habitat Global Village:
There are currently over 45 hosting programs (Habitat countries that host volunteer teams). Each country is accredited to host GV teams: assessment of capacity to host, trained GV staff, volunteer friendly building programs, emergency plans, etc… Each region has a HFHI Area Office (Philippines, Costa Rica, Slovakia, USA and Canada) that that Area Office GV staff to support their region’s programs The vast majority of hosting programs employee local staff, masons, drivers, etc… There are also sending countries that sending GV teams. Can you name some of them? All programs abide by the Minimum Standards for Sending and Hosting Programs.

Global Village Host Countries receive:
Financial and labour support through Global Village donations Volunteers bring energy, encouragement and hope to communities so that people in the developing world understand that their needs have not been forgotten Visiting groups support local economies through in-country expenses

A rich cross-cultural experience that promotes understanding and mutual respect An uplifting and life changing cross-cultural experience The adventure of international travel

How we’re helping: Teams of volunteers will take part in exciting and diverse home building projects with Habitat for Humanity families around the world

About Global Village Teams:
Pre-arranged teams come from organizations such as; church groups, schools and universities Individuals sign up and a trip is organized by a trained team leader, then posted on the GV website in order to attract the remaining team members necessary

About Global Village Teams:
Teams are made up of people with 1-2 leaders per team Teams work with local families, community volunteers and trained construction supervisors

Building becomes Learning
Volunteers develop a greater understanding of global aid and development issues, while forming lasting bonds with families, the local community and other team members.

Criteria to participate:
Participants must be 16 years or older No prior build experience required Willing to work hard in a group Up for a challenge

Helping fellow Canadians means:
Gain a better understanding of the need for affordable homeownership in Canada Work with a family to help them build a home, strengthen their community and enrich both their lives and your own Learn about different Canadian cultures and the environmental differences throughout the country

Cost $1,500 to $2,500 depending on location
Cost includes a donation to host affiliate, GV Canada program, accommodations, meals, transportation and medical insurance Tax receipt issued for trip cost and airfare Airfare not included
