2. History of HA security
Julie K became Director of HA beginning in the 2004/2005 school year.
That year the Director and Mrs. Sheppard (then Miss Walker)attended the first school security training that was offered in our region. It was offered by the Department of Homeland Security.

3. HA Security
Our first lockdown drills occurred in the 04/05 school year.
In 2007, HA adopted a Board Policy making lockdown drills mandatory.
Over the next few years Ms. Kildee met with representatives of Homeland Security to keep abreast of best practice initiatives.

4. HA security
Based on the these best practices, HA’s protocol for lockdown drills has changed over the years.
We follow the State of Michigan guidelines that mandate three lockdown drills: one prior to December, and one while students are on the playground and/or during lunch.
We conduct a minimum of these three drills and if we deem it necessary we will conduct more.

5. Other drills Annually we must conduct the following drills:
Five fire drills: three prior to Dec 1st, two during the remainder of the year with reasonable spacing intervals between each drill.
Two tornado drills: one must be conducted during March. We conduct three tornado drills.
For all of our drills, emergency personnel randomly come to observe. For the first of each type of drill emergency personnel are present.

6. Ha security
During the 2011/2012 school year we worked with an architecture firm to design our office wing with security features in mind.
The front office entrance was designed to allow parents and visitors into the vestibule, but not the school. Parents and visitors had to go to the office to enter the school hallways.
The administrative offices have windows facing the parking lot.

7. HA security
In the 2008/2009 school year the buzzer system was installed on the middle school entrance door and the outside door by the music room.
When the new wing was built in 2012 a buzzer was installed at the outside door adjacent to Ms. Gilmer’s room.
Until two weeks ago, all outside doors except the main entrance were locked between the hours of 8:00am and 3:00pm.

8. HA security
After the Parkland school shooting we no longer let parents into the school lobby prior to dismissal. Now parents wait in the vestibule until 3:15pm and the eastern most outside door facing Academy Rd. is locked at all times.
The west door facing Academy Rd. is unlocked between 3:15pm and 3:30pm to allow walkers to accompany students to parking lot.

9. Improved security
In March 2018, the HA Security Task Force was created – a group including admin, Mr. Melero, and parents.
On April 30th the new buzzer system was installed on the main entrance and the vestibule office door.
It took a few days to get the electrical system to sync and on May 2nd the system went into effect.
Volunteer parents man tables in the lobby to oversee a sign-in log for all concert attendees.
Attendees also are given a concert specific sticker to wear while in the school.

10. Improved security
Beginning in the 2018/2019 school year, all parents and visitors will use the Raptor Security System to enter the school.
The Raptor System holds driver’s license information in a database and runs the name through the Sex Offenders Registry and iChat system. HA can also enter information pertinent to the security of a student.
When the person is cleared through the system a badge is printed with the person’s driver’s license picture.

11. Improved security
The first time a parent or visitor is entered into the system they do so with a secretary or office personnel.
On subsequent visits, the parent or visitor runs their own driver’s license and prints a badge through a computer station kiosk in the vestibule.

12. Improved security - training
On Monday admin met with Detective Knapp from the Major Case Detective Bureau in Flint regarding ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) training.
ALICE training is the latest protocol for active shooter incidences.
Our staff will be trained on August 23, 2018.

13. Record Check - Volunteers
All volunteers (for the classroom or chaperones for field trips) must participate in volunteer training ONCE.
All volunteers must submit to the Michigan I-Chat record check each school year.
Any driving under the influence misdemeanor precludes a parent from driving students other than his/her own on a field trip.

14. Volunteers (cont’d)
Individuals convicted of a “listed offense” (from the Sex Offender Registry) cannot volunteer in any capacity at HA.

15. Record check - staff
All potential staff members must have a federal background check prior to his/her first day of work (took effect on January 1, 2006).
Even prior to the January 2006 date (for digital scans), HA required a federal background check.
HA cannot employ any individuals convicted of a “listed offense” or any felony.
The same protocol is in place for staff members that may have a driving under the influence misdemeanor (we have none).
