The UN Secretariat UN membership: 192 member states
UN Secretariat: 33,944 staff world wide approx. 30% staff professional approx. 70% general service 35 duty stations: HQs, regional commissions, tribunals and other Secretariat duty stations 16 peacekeeping operations (current) 11 peacebuilding and political operations

Types of posts in the Secretariat
Geographic posts (professional) Approximately 3,000 Member State have quotas based on the size of its financial contribution, its population, and its membership in the UN. Language Professional posts Translators, interpreters, editors and other linguistic functions in the 6 official languages Regular and temporary appointments

Professional Noblemaire Principle: international civil service should be able to recruit staff from its Member States, including the highest-paid USG and ASG, D1 and D2 P-1 through P-5 General Service Flemming Principle: conditions of service for locally recruited staff should reflect the best prevailing conditions found locally for similar work GS-1 through GS-7 Field Service Field duty stations of DPKO FS-1 through FS-7

Examination (1) The first NCRE was held in Regularly organized since 1981 Examinations held annually for countries that are pre-selected, based on their representation status and agreement with their Governments Entry level positions (P-2) to be filled through competitive examinations

Examination (3) The 2008 NCRE is offered in the following occupational groups: . Finance . Information Technology . Political Affairs . Human Rights* . Science and Technology (Environment) . Programme Evaluation . Statistics *Selected Member-States only

Examination (4) 2008 NCRE applicants must: Be a national of any of the participating Member States Be younger than 32 years old as of 31 December 2008 Hold at least a first-level university degree relevant to one of the offered occupational groups Be fluent in either English or French Fill the application form and apply by 31 October 2007 (15 November for LSE participants to special )

Examination (5) The examination will consist of a written examination and an interview The written examination has 2 parts: . General Paper (45 minutes) . Specialized Paper (3 hours 45 minutes) The written exam will take place on 26 February 2008

Successful candidates are placed on a roster When selected to fill a vacancy, receive a two-year probationary contract Offers can be made at any of the UN duty stations (NY, Geneva, Vienna, etc) At least two different functions within the first five years of service

Examinations for Language Positions
Translators, Interpreters, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Language Teachers are recruited through competitive examinations Not organized annually but depends on the needs of the organization Candidates must have an official UN language as their main language Candidates must hold a University degree (any specialization, except interpreters and teachers) Age limit: 56 years

Usually for mid-level and senior positions (P3 level posts and above) Requirements: Advanced University degree preferred; combination of a bachelor’s degree and relevant work experience is also accepted Minimum of 4-5 years of specific relevant professional experience (for a P3 level post) Languages: at least English or French (and Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish) Posts are advertised for 2 months

Also advertised in Galaxy Variety of functions and locations (generic advertisements) Need for rapid recruitment, use of rosters General Qualifications: Advanced university degree Minimum of 4 years of relevant professional experience Good health and willingness to work under difficult and/or dangerous conditions

Associate Expert Programme
Bilateral agreement between the UN and donor countries (18) To offer graduates the opportunity to acquire professional experience in a variety of functions Duration: 2 years, up to 3 years For more information contact your Ministry of Foreign Affairs

UN Volunteers www.unv.org
UNV provides some benefits (living allowance, travel, annual leave etc…) Assignments usually last 24 months. Shorter assignments (6 to 12 months) are increasingly common. Requirements: . Ideally years of age . Advanced university degree . Generally 5 years of experience and a good working knowledge of at least one of the UN languages . Ability to adjust in difficult living conditions; . Prior volunteering and/or working experience in a developing country is an asset.

Internship Programme (1)
Offers opportunity to familiarize yourself with the daily issues of the UN Interns work with staff in departments related to their field of study It is an unpaid internship

Internship Programme (2)
Requirements: . Must be enrolled in graduate school . Must apply at least 4 months in advance of the commencement of internship . Full-time Internship Duration: 2 months (may be extended up to 6 months) Starting dates are mid-January, June and mid-September
