1 Food Webs and Energy

2 In Pg.98 Concept of Definition Map
Category What is it? Properties How would you describe it? Comparison What is it similar to? Illustrations What are some examples?

3 Do it Now pg. 98 What type of model did you just do?
Physical, conceptual, Mathematical or computer?

4 Use section 2.2 in the textbook Unit 5: Energy in Ecosytems
Title Page Write the topic for the unit in the middle of the paper and box it in. 2. Divide the paper into 3 equal sections. 3. Put a subtopic/key word in each section. 4. Add an appropriate picture to each section(no stick figures). 5. Each section must have 3 different colors(black and white don’t count). Don’t use the same 3 colors for 2 different sections. 99 Use section 2.2 in the textbook Pg. 48 Unit 5: Energy in Ecosytems

5 Vocabulary and Understanding Main ideas Pg. 100
Staple tape or glue Understanding Main Ideas here along with Vocabulary.

6 Energy in Ecosystems Cornell Notes Pg 101

7 What are the Laws of Conservation of Matter and Energy?
Law of Conservation of Energy-Energy cannot be created or destroyed but it can be transferred or transformed. Law of Conservation of Matter-Matter(atoms) cannot be created or destroyed but it can be changed from one form into another.

8 What does food provide to organisms?
Matter The atoms necessary to build the macromolecules that make up living things(remember NOCH!) Energy Food molecules are broken down by the process of digestion. This releases energy that is stored in the chemical bonds.

9 What are Macromolecules?
Large(thousands of atoms) Includes: Carbohydrates-Made of C,H,O Proteins-Made of C,H,O,N Lipids-Made of C,H,O And…. Nucleic Acids

10 Do all living things need food?
Producers are organisms that do NOT get their energy and nutrients from food. They get their energy from radiant energy from sun. It is turned into chemical energy by the process of photosynthesis.

11 What happens during photosynthesis?
CO2 and H2Oare taken in by the producer. Glucose(C6H12O6) is assembled. Powered by the radiant energy from the sun. Glucose may be linked into larger molecules like starch

12

13 What is a consumer? Organisms that get their energy and matter from food. Take in the molecules stored in the bodies of other organisms. The energy and elements in these molecules are released in a series of chemical reactions (digestion). This is why the energy in food is called chemical energy.

15 T – Shirt pg. 103 T – shirt Activity Concept is Law of conservation.

16 Do it again pg. 98 Why are food webs important?

17 Out pg. 98 This tree started as a little seed. What provided most of the mass that made the tree grow so large?

18 In Pg. 104 List 3 things you can do better in 2018 than you did in 2017 Write : I need a new notebook for the first day of second Semester, when I come back from Winter Break.

19 Do it now Pg. 104 For Each of the above 3 list a way that you can do this. Example: Do better on my notebook I can come into class and get started right away and each night at home I can check on line to make sure I did everything I was supposed to do. Write : I need a new notebook for the first day of second Semester, when I come back from Winter Break.

20 Pg. 105 – food webs – Ecosystem energy
Cornell Style notes Title Food Webs

21 What does a food web look like?
PHOTOSYNTHESIS Chemical energy EATING AND DIGESTION Radiant energy Chemical energy EATING AND DIGESTION Chemical energy Chemical energy EATING AND DIGESTION

22 What is The Web of Life Ultimate consumer Every organism, dead or alive, is a potential source of food for other organisms Food chains can be used to show how energy is transferred, via food, from producers to primary consumers to secondary consumers, and so on. Trophic Level 5 10% Tertiary consumer Trophic Level 4 10% Secondary consumer Trophic Level 3 10% Primary consumer Trophic Level 2 10% Producer Trophic Level 1

23 What are Trophic levels?
Organisms are not always at the same trophic level.

24 Fig. 1 4 Tertiary Consumer 3 Secondary Consumer 2 Primary Consumer 1
Producer

25 Fig. 2 4 3 2 1

26 What is a Food Chain Show one possible path through the food web.
A food web is made up of many food chains.

27 Do it again Pg. 104 Which of the three goals will be the hardest to accomplish? Write : I need a new notebook for the first day of second Semester, when I come back from Winter Break.

28 Out Pg.104 Why did you pick that one?
Write : I need a new notebook for the first day of second Semester, when I come back from Winter Break.

29 In pg. 106 Write : I need a new notebook for the first day of second Semester, when I come back from Winter Break.

30 Do it now Pg. 106 Write : I need a new notebook for the first day of second Semester, when I come back from Winter Break.

31 Pg. 107 – Food Web Parts Put the Parts of the food web coloring and labeling sheet here. Label and fill in all blanks Color this worksheet

32 Pg. 108 – Web Quest Staple tape or Glue the Web Quest
Follow instructions on the web quest. You will use different sites If you go to my.ccsd.net and look up web quest or on google classroom you can copy and paste the addresses into the internet.

33 Pre lab Pg. 109 copy all of this - Pencil
The Greek symbol delta( ) means “change in”. A beaker is filled with water. The temp. of the water is taken. The water and the beaker are heated and the temp. of the water is taken again. Before heating=20o C After heating=32o C What was the T of the water in the beaker? Write a formula that you could use to find the of any substance.

34 Page 109 How do we measure the energy in food?
The chemical energy stored in food is measured in a unit called a calorie.

35 Do it again Pg. 106 I need to get a new notebook for second semester that starts on: Monday January 8th, 2018.

36 Out Pg. 106 I need to get a new notebook for second semester that starts on: Monday January 8th, 2018.

37 IN Pg. 110 I need to get a new notebook for second semester that starts on: Monday January 8th, 2018.

38 Do it Now Pg. 110 I need to get a new notebook for second semester that starts on: Monday January 8th, 2018.

39 Burn a Snack Lab pg. 111 Staple tape or Glue lab page here.

40 Do it now pg. 110 I need to get a new notebook for second semester that starts on: Monday January 8th, 2018.

41 Out pg. 110 I need to get a new notebook for second semester that starts on: Monday January 8th, 2018.
