5 Mini-lesson ➡ Directions: Read the story that Adrian’s grandfather told him and answer the questions about it. Adrian’s Grandfather: “How much money do you want? When I was your age, my grandfather used to tell me that he would go down to the store on the corner and buy a sandwich and an apple for five cents. Five cents! Can you imagine that? When I grew up here it cost two dollars to get soda and turkey sandwich at that same store and now you’re asking me for 7 bucks!?” Identify one enduring issue that Adrian’s father discusses in the passage above. Why is that enduring issue significant to him?

Identify and define an enduring issue raised by this set of documents. Using your knowledge of Social Studies and evidence from the documents, argue why the issue you selected is significant and how it has endured across time.

11 Example Introduction Innovation allows humans to improve the way they do things by advancing technology. Innovation brought humans out of the Paleolithic and into the Neolithic. The Neolithic Revolution led to farming, more advanced weapons, and animal domestication. This led to the first civilizations. In Document 1 it explains how people changed from hunting and gathering in the Paleolithic to farming and domesticating animals in the Neolithic. This change is considered an innovation because hunting and gathering was dangerous. Farming is better because

12 Example In document 3 it explains how early civilizations like Egypt and Mesopotamia created canals to help irrigate their crops. When people started to settle down and farm they needed to find a consistent water supply for their crops. Plants need sunlight and water to grow. Early farmers could not predict when it would rain so they created an irrigation system to water their crops everyday. This is an innovation because
