The Demonstrative Pronouns this/these that/those
2
Pronouns — a Definition
A pronoun is a word that can “stand in” for a noun, such as “he,” or “them.” It can also distiguish a noun, like “this man” or “that one” There are different types of pronouns: Personal (he, she, it; or, in Latin is, ea, id) Relative (who, whom, which, etc.; or, in Latin, qui, quae, quod) Demonstrative (this, that, etc.; or, in Latin… Hic, haec, hoc and ille, illa, illud This/these that/those
3
Pronouns are Adjective-ish
Just like adjectives, pronouns MUST agree with the noun they describe in those same three ways: Case Number Gender (this is the one that’s tricky…you’ve just GOT to memorize the genders of words)
4
Straight talk: the Ugly Truth
Until you learn the case endings AND the genders of nouns forwards and backwards, so to speak, you will NOT be as successful as you could be/would like to be. Suck it up and learn them! If you bomb a vocab quiz, make it up fast! The sooner you learn the forms the better!
5
Back to pronouns As mentioned, they need to agree with the noun they modify in Case, Number, and Gender. This means that pronouns have masculine, feminine, and neuter forms in both the singular and plural. Let’s look at these forms:
