Density of Earth Materials
2
What things are on the earth?
Water Air Soil Rocks
3
Water! 73% of the Earth is covered in water Water’s density is 1 g/mL
Water is one of the biggest carriers and depositors of sediment.
4
Air Air is made of gases, and gases are less dense than water. The density of the atmosphere is g/mL. Gas Percentage of atmosphere Density Nitrogen 78% g/mL Oxygen 21% g/mL Argon .9% g/mL Carbon Dioxide .04 % g/mL Lots of other gases .06% xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Dirt Kinds of dirt are determined by how big the particles are. These are numbered from largest to smallest. 1.Gravel: pieces are bigger than 2mm, feels coarse 2.Sand: pieces are mm, feels gritty 3.Silt: pieces are mm, feels like flour 4.Clay: pieces are smaller than .002, feels sticky when wet.
6
Dirt particle sizes
7
Rocks There are three main kinds of rock in the earth.
Igneous- come from volcanoes Sedimentary- come from weathering Metamorphic- rocks buried and squished inside the earth Generally, rocks are more dense than water
8
Rocks Rocks that are more dense generally were formed deeper in the earth. You can identify types of rock from their densities.
9
Layers of the Earth Earth gets more and more dense nearer to the center. Atmosphere : g/mL Continental Crust: 2.7 to 3.0 g/cm3 Oceanic Crust: 3.0 to 3.3 g/cm3 Mantle (silicates): 3.3 to 5.7 g/cm3 Outer Core (liquid): 9.9 to 12.2 g/cm3 Inner Core (solid): 12.6 to 13.0 g/cm3
