6 Background Today´s centralization trends and the emerging use of cloud services demand more of the network infrastructure than ever before. Therefore having a network that is designed for 100% availability is a must. MS office, google doc s in the cloud, LMS systems in the cloud web conf and other media services are centralised,,

Approach Gather information from NREN’s and NDN board Network working group of Nordic NREN CTO’s and senior techs Collaboration on development of the Network objectives and cost sharing model Iterative process, constantly aligning the progress with stakeholders..

8 Initial reuse of existing optical platform
Approach Cost sharing model Nordic NREN’s will provide NORDUnet with the needed spectrum in their respective networks NORDUnet will cover the cost of getting access to the spectrum (incremental cost) Initial reuse of existing optical platform By reusing the OLS part of the existing Ciena platform that is getting freed up in the Nordics we a can lower the initial investment

Accommodate ladder architecture Adding redundancy out of Norway as per Nkom report recommendations Adding redundancy as per N+2(3) desire Have topology protect against major city or regional infrastructure outages Have one link from each NREN to Europe not touching any other Nordic NREN Using NREN spectrum where technically possible Redundancy to support ”100% availability” starts with the number 3 Ladder is having large north south pipes and build ladders –east-west to create mesh and avoid network segmentation Regional, cyber attacks or other outages to ie. Power infrastructure

10 NEXTgen Network Objectives
NDN fiber only where necessary, but keeping an EU footprint that still makes NDN an attractive partner for NREN’s and commercial operators Take in to account the requirements for any known major infrastructure projects in the Nordics ie. ESS - European Spallation Source, Lund and Copenhagen EISCAT_3D - Incoherent Scatter Radar facility, that will be located in Finland, Norway and Sweden, way up north…  Be affordable = lower overall cost than the current generation network

11 NEXTgen Operational Objectives
Create sufficient redundancy to lower the operational cost by; Minimising the need for 24/7 support in the classic sense Lowering the on site support levels and spare parts to NBD (Next Business Day) Establish a federated operations model

Support the various redundancy objectives Initial design to deliver 4 x 50GHz spectrum = 400GBps on all major stretches The Network must be affordable

Basic as is Nordic core using NREN spectrum Add a Baltic route Add a direct Norway-Denmark and vest Jutland route not touching Oslo Add a route Esbjerg-Hamburg Add a route Esbjerg-Amsterdam (Cobra cable) Add a route to support ESS and SUNET Copenhagen-Lund-via Bornholm to Germany Add a route Finland-Sweden via Åland

Add a route Gothenburg - Frederikshavn Add another CBF Ladder Finland(Vaasa)-Sweden (Umeå)-Norway (Trondheim) to protect against network segmentation Add……….. The Network must be affordable

Accommodate ladder architecture ✔︎ Adding redundancy out of Norway as per Nkom report recommendations ✔︎ Adding redundancy as per N+2(3) desire ✔︎ Have topology protect against major city or regional infrastructure outages. ✔︎ Dependency on Stockholm, Copenhagen and Hamburg regional areas removed Have one link from each NREN to Europe not touching any other Nordic NREN ✔︎ Using NREN spectrum where technically possible ✔︎ keeping an EU footprint that still makes NDN an attractive partner for NREN’s and commercial operators Having NORDUnet connectivity Amsterdam – London London – Frankfurt Frankfurt - Berlin And at least one route out of Scandinavia not touching Hamburg Yellow = Nordic NREN Spectrum Lighblue commercial capacity Green existing NREN networks willing to share spectrum Red new routes that need to be analysed and realised in the most sensible way. There are other options but this is the preferred Arcitecture that hopefullly will turn out to be affordabæe

17 Next Steps Further investigate Denmark – Norway, Nordic to Europe and inter Europe fiber and connectivity options. Investigate and analyse optical equipment options including joint procurement Making sure that the Network remain affordable during the transition process and beyond….. Secure alignment with the GÉANT Next Generation network and fiber foot print Alignment ie. Not having 4 routes from London to mainland Europe
