Energy
2
What is Energy? Energy is the capacity to do work or to produce change
1 joule = energy needed to lift a 1N (newton) object to a height of 1 m (metre).
3
Forms of Energy Many different forms of energy:
Solar energy: light and heat Elastic energy: wire spring Electrical energy: power station See p. 35, chart 2.6
4
Four basic forms: 1. Thermal energy: energy that comes from the random motion of the particles that make up a substance. Ex. 100 mL of hot water more energy that 100 mL of room temperature water
6
2. Radiant energy Kind of energy that contained in and transported by electromagnetic waves Ex. X-rays, microwaves, Ultraviolet waves of sun
8
3. Chemical energy Energy stored in the bonds of a molecule
Ex. Combustion of gasoline in a car combustion of fuel in a gas camping lamp Photosynthesis of sunlight into glucose in plants cellular respiration uses glucose for energy to move
10
Mechanical Energy Energy that results from the speed of an object, its mass, and its relationship to its surroundings. Ex. Rock falling off a cliff. Wind turbines water falls for hydroelectric power
12
Energy Transformation and Transfers
changing of energy from one form to another Ex. Burning a log: chemical to radiant & thermal
14
2. Transfer Movement of energy from one place to another.
ex. Energy travels from log to surroundings
15
Describe an energy transformation and/or an energy transfer for each:
16
Heat Transfer of thermal energy from one place to another.
Heat always travels from the hotter place toward the colder place.
