6 Three-dimensional figures have three dimensions: length, width, and height. A flat surface of a three-dimensional figure is called a face. An edge is where two faces meet. A vertex is where the figure comes to a point. The base is the shape used to classify the figure.

9 Additional Example 1A: Classifying Three-Dimensional Figures
Classify each three-dimensional figure. There is one base, and it is a pentagon. There are five triangular faces. The figure is a pentagonal pyramid.

10 Additional Example 1B: Classifying Three-Dimensional Figures
Classify each three-dimensional figure. There are two parallel bases, and they are both circles. The bases are connected by a curved surface. The figure is a cylinder.

11 Additional Example 1C: Classifying Three-Dimensional Figures
Classify each three-dimensional figure. There are two bases, and they are both hexagons. There are six rectangular faces. The figure is a hexagonal prism.

12 Check It Out: Example 1A Describe the bases and faces of the figure. Then name the figure. There are two bases and they are both triangles. There are three rectangular faces. The figure is a triangular prism.

13 Check It Out: Example 1B Describe the bases and faces of the figure. Then name the figure. There are two octagonal bases. There are eight rectangular faces. The figure is an octagonal prism.

14 Draw the figure shown in the front, top, and side views.
Additional Example 2: Drawing a Figure When Given Different Perspectives Draw the figure shown in the front, top, and side views. Front Top Side From the front and side views, there appears to be one cube in the top level, in the top left corner. The front view shows two cubes in the middle layer. The top view shows the bottom layer has three cubes.

15 Draw the figure shown in the front, top, and side views.
Check It Out: Example 2 Draw the figure shown in the front, top, and side views. Top Side Front Side Front From the front view, it appears that there are three levels. The top view shows that there is one cube on the right and three cubes on the bottom layer. The side view also shows that it is three cubes tall and there are three cubes in the bottom layer.

16 Additional Example 3: Drawing Different Perspectives of a Figure
Draw the front, top, and side views of the figure. Front: The figure looks like a row of 3 squares on the bottom with 2 squares on top of the right side and 1 square on top of the left side. Front

17 Additional Example 3 Continued
Draw the front, top, and side views of the figure. Top: The figure looks like a row of 3 squares. Top

18 Additional Example 3 Continued
Draw the front, top, and side views of the figure. Side: The figure looks like a column of 3 squares. Side

19 Draw the front, top, and side views of the figure.
Check It Out: Example 3 Draw the front, top, and side views of the figure. Front: The figure looks like a row of 4 squares on the bottom with 2 squares on top. Front

20 Check It Out: Example 3 Continued
Draw the front, top, and side views of the figure. Top: The figure looks like a row of 4 squares. Top

21 Check It Out: Example 3 Continued
Draw the front, top, and side views of the figure. Side Side: The figure looks like a column of 2 squares.
