1 Unit 3 Tissues, Membranes, and Integumentary System
Body Membranes Unit 3 Tissues, Membranes, and Integumentary System

2 Body Membranes Functions: 1. Line or cover body surfaces 2. Protect body surfaces 3. Lubricate body surfaces

3 Classification of Body Membranes
1. Epithelial Membranes - Cutaneous Membranes - Mucous Membrane - Serous Membrane 2. Connective Tissue Membranes -Synovial Membranes

4 Cutaneous Membranes Type of Epithelial Membrane Function: Protection
Location: Outermost Layer Example: Skin Stratified squamous epithelium with keratin Has underlying dermis Differs from other types of membranes because its dry!

5 Mucous Membranes Type of Epithelial Membrane
Function- absorption and secretion Location- Lines body cavities that open to the exterior body Examples- Nasal cavity, Mouth, Esophagus, Lungs and Bronchi Either Stratified squamous or simple columnar epithelium Moist/wet membrane

6 Serous Membranes Type of Epithelial Membrane
Function- Protection of internal organs Location- Lines the body cavities that are CLOSED off to the exterior of the body Examples- Parietal Peritoneum, Visceral Peritoneum Single layer of simple squamous epithelium Serous membranes occur in pairs Visceral – covering of organs Parietal – walls of organs Both membranes secrete “serous Fluid” so that organs can move without friction

7

8 Synovial membrane Type of Connective tissue Membrane
Function- Reduce friction in joints Line capsules that surround joints Provide a smooth surface Secrete “synovial fluid” to lubricate joint Location- Between joints Example- Bursa sac
