Steps to Revolution 1. Albany Congress – June 1754 – northern colonies met to coordinate defense of colonies and discuss problems with French. *Plan of Union – elected inter-colonial legislature with taxing power. Colonial governments refused because of fear of central control. Plan for a central government with independence, crown didn’t like it.

. Seven Years War 1756 military disaster until England turns to Pitt. - Lets colonies do their own recruiting and reimburses colonies for costs. Deportation of Acadians. Wolfe and Montcalm at Quebec. Treaty of Paris France and Spain leave new world on British lands. first exposure of colonists to the crown and didn’t like it. left Indians in bad position. Couldn’t play one off against the other and it became obvious that they were getting pushed out Treaty with Indians allows building of forts on Indian land and British get large tracts of land. The defeat of the French and the ceding of this much land play a huge role in the movement toward Revolution. this ended “salutary neglect” and got the Parliament directly involved. goodies for everyone

Proclamation of 1763 Changes in England Grenville
set the western boundary as the Appalachian Mountains. This was done to lower possibility of conflict that Crown would have to pay for. consent to taxation Burgesses were the only assembly that could tax no need to obey tax laws of other assemblies (nullification) Loyal Nine of Boston artisans and printers Boston mob hangs Oliver in effigy and destroys Hutchinson’s house Sons of Liberty New York. Artisans and merchants that were frightened of the Mob.

Stamp Act Congress 1765 -writes a formal conservative protest to Stamp Acts Declaratory Act 1765 Townshend Acts 1767 -tea, glass and paper -only on goods from Britain (not good economically) -customs officials are paid by colonies.

Boston Massacre March -seizure of Liberty (hancocks boat) -mob of laborers throw snowballs and are killed Paranoia Committees of Correspondence 1772 -implementation of Townshend act makes city government of Boston form committee to correspond with other Mass. Towns. -They prepare a document of AMERICAN rights. They are starting to cut the ties.

Tea Act of May 1773 -save the East India Company by requiring all tea to be by them. No middlemen, just agents of the company, cutting out colonial merchants. Boston Tea Party December Coercive or Intolerable Acts March 1774 -Port of Boston closed until tea was paid for -substituted Mass. Ruling council with appointments -Justice Act said that a person that commits murder trying to suppress a riot or public disturbance can be tried elsewhere Quartering Act Quebec Act
