What do the chapter titles foreshadow?

Boy or Beast? Soon after arriving on the island, Jack begins to change from an English school boy to a hunter and a savage. Read Chapter 3. Look closely at the language used to describe Jack: what he does, how he moves, the sounds he makes, the things he is compared with. Draw a table with 2 columns in your exercise books – Quotations and What does it suggest about Jack? - and list the words and phrases that suggest that Jack is changing. Make sure you use direct quotations from the novel. You should find 10 quotes.

List 3 examples where Ralph is struggling as leader. Find 5 examples of Ralph struggling to remain civilised. As before, draw these up in a table – Quotations and What does it suggest about Ralph?

Simon Simon – what do we learn about him?
He brings to Ralph’s attention that the littluns are scared of the beastie, that “[t]hey talk and scream” (p.53) What is Jack’s response to this observation from Simon about the littluns? p.53 Jack then goes on to tell us about the feeling he gets sometimes when he is hunting pp What do these combination of things tell us about Jack?

Jack and Ralph Jack and Ralph have their first major conflict – hunting versus keeping the fire alive. “They faced each other on the bright beach, astonished at the rub of feeling” (p.55). Explain what this quote means. “They looked at each other, baffled, in love and hate. All the warm salt water of the bathing-pool and the shouting and splashing and laughing were only just sufficient to bring them together again” (p.56). Explain what this quote means. What does it foreshadow?
