Read the brief poem below and discuss with your group: “Love’s only weakness What is it saying about love? What type of love is this referring to? is also its greatest strength: it defies reason.” How does this apply to the play?

4 A bit of poetry… Love’s only weakness is also its greatest strength: it defies reason. Falling to the ground, I watch a leaf settle down in a bed of brown. A soft autumn wind can make a mountain’s shadow waver in the light. Don’t weep, little one— All things, like the stars themselves Must part in the end.

5 How to Haiku: Uses 17 syllables, 3 lines, 5-7-5 Often based in nature
Juxtaposes different ideas next to each other in order to make a point Creates a “snapshot” of a unique or powerful feeling/moment

6 is also its greatest strength: 5 it defies reason.

7 A soft autumn wind can make a mountain’s shadow waver in the light.
How to Haiku: A soft autumn wind can make a mountain’s shadow waver in the light. Mountains could represent a bully, and a soft autumn wind could represent kind words spoken to an individual who has been bullied. The one who has been bullied is carrying around the sadness and hurt (the mountain’s shadow) as if they cannot be rid of it themselves. With this interpretation, this poem could be saying that all it takes is for someone to step up and show kindness towards that person, to stand up for them, and that will go further than the harsh words/actions of a bully ever will.
