Cardiac function can be monitored using serum troponin levels and/or echocardiography; findings of initial investigations dictate the necessary follow-up intervals. In practice, adherence to this type of follow-up regimen is inconsistent. Frequent testing of asymptomatic patients might lead to many 'false positives' and the resultant anxiety and possible additional unnecessary interventions and associated morbidity and costs. This, and similar algorithms have not been validated and their clinical utility is currently uncertain.
