What makes a successful kite?
‘Let’s go fly a kite!’ Year 3 Outline of work Autumn 2018 Topic Key Question: What makes a successful kite? We will be answering this question through all aspects of the curriculum. Maths: There will be an emphasis on ‘Number’ this term. This will include place value, addition and subtraction. We will also be teaching Bonds and Times Table methods and sending them home for Homework. We will also be exploring shape and measure – focusing on designing kites. This will be taught through the 3 maths areas: fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Times tables: PLEASE continue to work on these. It is really important that the children begin to develop fluency in the 5, 10 2, 3, 4, 8 times tables – it helps in ALL areas of the Maths Curriculum. . English: Writing:. We will be writing adventure stories and information texts. We will be improving our general writing skills through developing our spelling and different aspects of punctuation and grammar (SPAG). Reading: We will be exploring adventure and mystery texts. We will explore Kites through a wide variety of texts. We will also continue to participate in the Accelerated Reader scheme – please ensure that your child is reading for at least fifteen minutes a night, and that quizzes are completed regularly in school, to ensure progress is being made. PE: This term we will be working on football, cricket and dance in 3 Cedar and swimming in 3 Beech. Science: Through our topic on Forces and Magnets, we will be finding out how and why things move the way they do, particularly focusing on magnets, friction and air resistance. What forces affect us in our everyday life? Can you think of an example at home today?! How do they affect flying a kite? RE: We will be studying topics based on caring for others, animal and the environment and sharing and being generous. Also, the topics of creating unity and harmony, and participating and being willing to lead. PSHE: We will be exploring New Beginnings, Keeping Safe, Getting On and Falling Out, Say No to Bullying, Money Management and Internet Safety. What can you find out about Kites?
HOMEWORK: Set on a Friday and due in the following a Friday. Please sign the homework diary each week. If you need to communicate anything about homework, please write it in the diary and we will read it, reply and sign them each week. Homework will be marked and returned the following week. Sometimes computer based Homework will be set – if it is not possible to complete this at home a paper based option will be available or it can be completed in school at lunchtime. We will be practising a new approach to spelling tests in school each Friday to test the weeks spellings. We will also be working on our times tables cards each week. Approaches to Learning: We will be focusing on how we can have a GROWTH MINDSET. We will be talking about the Learning Pit, how we learn and how mistakes are a good thing because it shows we are learning. Geography: We will identify human and physical characteristics and observe these in a real life setting at the park. We will practice our use of maps by using both physical and digital maps for our trip. Spanish: We will be exploring the different languages we all speak, where Spanish is spoken in the world and learn simple classroom words and phrases. Music: We will be listening to, composing and writing down `Programme music` which tells a story or paints a picture. We will explore, play and create different types of accompaniments Computing: We will be exploring Physical Systems using Lego WeDo. Art & DT: We will design, evaluate, create and test kites. Supporting learning at home: Mymaths.co.uk: Children have their own log ins for this fantastic resource. Real Life maths experiences are the most relevant, such as counting change, fractions of food items. Please encourage your child to read for at least fifteen minutes a night, as well as learning their times tables and spellings. Handwriting: It is very important that your child’s handwriting is joined and neat.
