2 Climate regions The entire area covered by the Sahara is classified as desert because its annual precipitation averages less than 10 inches. The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world and covers 75% of North Africa.

3 The Sahel is a flat plain just south of the Sahara that forms a transition zone between the Sahara and the savannas to the south.

4 Morocco is one of the leading exporters of phosphates.
Natural resources North Africa’s most important resources are phosphates, natural gas, and petroleum. Morocco is one of the leading exporters of phosphates.

5 Algeria has the 10th largest natural gas reserves in the world.
Algeria also ranks 16th in oil reserves and 6th among the world’s gas exporters.
