Classifying Matter Notes
2
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.
There are many different kinds of mater that have different characteristics such as boiling and melting temperatures, hardness, and elasticity.
3
MATTER MIXTURES SUBSTANCES Heterogeneous mixtures Homogeneous Elements
Compounds
4
Mixtures Mixtures contain more than one kind of matter. Mixtures are not chemically combined. There are 2 types: Homogeneous and Heterogeneous mixtures
5
Separating Mixtures Mixtures can be separated be physical means such as: sorting filtering heating cooling
6
Homogeneous Mixture A homogeneous mixture contains more than one type of matter and is the same throughout. Other Examples of Homogeneous Mixtures?
7
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture that contains more than one type of matter and is not the same throughout An example of a heterogeneous mixture is chicken noodle soup
8
Substances Matter that has a specific composition and specific properties. There are 2 types of substances: Elements and Compounds
9
Elements A substance that contains only one type of atom.
Iron Bolts Hydrogen Gas
10
Compounds A substance that contains more than one type of atom.
Examples: NaCl (salt) CO H2O
11
Main difference between Mixtures and Substances?
Substances cannot be separated into different kinds of matter by physical means such as filtering, sorting, heating, or cooling. Mixtures can be separated by physical means.
