1
Classifying Matter Physical Science
2
Classifying Matter PURE Matter is either Pure Substance or a Mixture
Element – contains only 1 type of atom Compound – elements combined in fixed proportions.
3
Compounds Compounds can be broken down into simpler substances, elements cannot. Compounds have a fixed composition, mixtures do not.
4
Mixtures Heterogeneous mixture – composition is not uniform Homogeneous mixture – composition is uniform
5
Homogeneous or Heterogeneous?
Chocolate chip ice cream Vanilla ice cream Cake batter Chicken noodle soup Sand
6
Types of Mixtures The mixture type is based on particle size. Solution – substances dissolve and form homogeneous mixture. Suspension – substances will separate over time and form heterogeneous mixture. Colloid – substances are suspended but will not separate over time.
7
Separating Mixtures Filtration – based on PARTICLE SIZE Distillation – based on BOILING POINTS.
8
States of Matter Solid – definite shape and volume Liquid – definite volume, indefinite shape Gas – indefinite volume, indefinite shape
9
Properties of Matter Physical properties – can observe/ measure without changing matter Chemical properties – can only observe or measure by changing matter
10
Physical or Chemical? Melting point Flammability Boiling point Density Malleability Hardness Reactivity Conductivity
