Pure Substances and Mixtures
2
Review from Last Week… Did you…?
Complete the worksheet on the Particle Theory of Matter? Put your name on it? Put it in the pass in bin?
3
Matter in Our World Do the reading silently
Highlight (or circle/underline) words that you feel might be important What terms did you come up with?
4
Matter Molecules
5
Pure Substances Elements
A pure substance containing only one kind of particle An element is always uniform all the way through (homogeneous) A element cannot be separated into simpler there are over 100 different elements that each have a unique structure; classified on the periodic table
6
Pure Substances Compounds
A pure substance containing two or more different kinds of atoms The atoms are chemically combined in some way A compound is always homogenous Compounds cannot be separated by physical means (separating a compound requires a chemical reaction) The properties of a compound are usually different than the properties of the elements it contains.
7
Pure Substances Molecules: When 2 or more atoms are combined together (maybe from the same element ex: O2) All Compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are compounds
8
Pure Substances
9
Is it a…element, compound or molecule?
A) Compound B) Mixture of Element and molecule C) Mixture of element and compound D) Compound E) Molecules F) Element G) Mixture of Compounds H) Element I) Compound
10
Mixtures Two or more pure substances or elements NOT chemical combined (Physically mixed) No reaction between the substances
11
Mixtures Heterogeneous Mixture: mixtures that have two or more components that remain VISIBLE even after they are mixed
12
Mixtures Homogeneous Mixture: mixtures that have two or more components that appear like only ONE substance (Solutions, alloys)
13
Mixtures Cont’d Mixtures can be separated into their components by chemical or physical means The properties of a mixture are similar to the properties of its components.
