Intention of the Act … Is responsible for it’s confidentiality
Briefly, the organisation who collects the data Is responsible for it’s confidentiality It must ensure the data is meaningful to the business It must ensure the data is accurate and that the data has come from directly from the individual or from a reliable source, it must also make sure the data is up to date If a unique identifier (eg your Tax/Student No) is assigned to an individual, the organisation must make sure the correct person has been identified and that the unique identifier is necessary to the running of its business It must only allow employees who need the data when performing their jobs to have access to the data It may NOT pass this data to others without the permission of the individual

Implications and impacts of breaching the Privacy Act…
Using another person’s username and password without approval is a privacy breach An employer would reserve the right to copy and examine any files that might relate to inappropriate use An employer may close down your user account and stop access to their IT system If you break New Zealand laws you deal with the appropriate agency
