1 What’s Happening in First Grade
Campfire News Week of October 8-12 What’s Happening in First Grade Spanish Phrase of the Week is: ! Que tengas un buen día ! (Have a great day ! ) Inquiry into Math: We have continue our work in Cluster 2. This week, we will explore some different strategies used to add or subtract (ie. make a ten, count on, number line, etc.) Inquiry into Literacy: We will explore a non-fiction text called, Firetrucks by Judith Jango-Cohen. We will: study fire safety vocabulary, text features specific to non-fiction text and will practice answering text-dependent questions related to our text. We will study Letterland Unit 5 and will sort words according to rhyme patterns –en, -et, and –ell. We will also learn the fun phonic fable of -wh and use consonant y for the first time. The -ll at the end of short words is taught with Lucy Lamp Light and Linda Lamp Light, Best Friends at the End. Writer’s Workshop: We integrate our writing with our Fire Safety study. This week, we will be writing about what firefighters: can, do and have. Inquiry into Science: Our study of rocks continues! Camp First Grade Phone: (704) Around the Campfire Pete the Cat field trip forms and payment are now past due. Please turn them in ASAP. Thank you to those who have already done so. Our trip is planned for Monday, October 15. Permission slips and payments need to be turned in, in order for each child to go. Reading homework will begin. Please make sure that you are reading each night with your child. For spelling, please make sure to not only be spelling the current week’s words but please go over the review words as well.
