Hawaii and Culture: College Style Chat
Make a “Hawaii and Culture” section in your Reading Log. Write down interesting thoughts during your discussion that you could share or refer to later. Remember that everyone has a voice and everyone’s opinions are respected. What makes Hawaii unique in terms of mixing cultures? Do you think Hawaii is open to mixing cultures, or are there still some cultural problems you see? Be specific. What do you think about the movement of the Reinstated Hawaiian Government (Sovereignty Movement)

Last thing…then we’ll start reading.
On Page 148, read “Build Background” section. When you’ve finished reading it, turn to your elbow partner and summarize what it talks about.
7
“While Reading Notes” While you read, you will stop at the bottom of each page to write a 1-2 sentence summary of what happened on that page. You will also make a character chart. When you get to the bottom of each page, list the characters and write what you know or think about them. Feel free to give your opinion about how they are acting as well as describing them.

Post reading: Make a group of 3
One person is the recorder. Answer on filler paper. (Write your names!) On page 156, answer the “Think Critically” questions 2-5. Discuss them with your group and write down the different answers you and your group members had. (Don’t forget to support your opinions with specific details from the story!)
