Bell Work! Which items have you never heard of?
Pick up a handout from the front lab table and begin discussing the items with your group. Which items have you never heard of? Which items do you like? Which items do you not like?
2
Is it an acid…or a base?! Around the room, there are a variety of “unknown” substances. At each item (station), read the directions VERY CAREFULLY. Some directions will require you to touch the substance…or smell the substance…or observe the substance…or taste the substance. Some things should not be put in your mouth so be VERY CAREFUL. Complete the task by reading the directions then make a prediction.

Is it an acid…or a base?! Today’s Goal:
Identify the properties of acids and bases. By the end of class today, you should be able to… List 3 properties of acids. List 3 properties of bases. Identify uses for acids. Identify uses for bases.

Acids and Bases Chapter 14 Title of page 81
5
Properties of acids…
6
Yellow areas on your teeth is acid erosion of the tooth enamel.
7
Acid Burn
8
What is an acid? ACID: compound that increases the number of hydronium ions (H+ or H3O+) and it has a pH less than 7 Examples: lemons, soda, milk, acid rain
9
Properties of bases…
11
Base Burn
12
What is a base? BASE: compound that increases the number of hydroxide ions (OH-) and has a pH greater than 7 Examples: Sea water, soap, cleaners
13
Properties of Acids and Bases:
Sour Bitter Changes color in an indicator Feels slippery React with metals (corrosive) Conducts an electric current pH > 7 pH < 7

Let’s race! Sally bit into a food that tasted very sour. Sally is probably eating… ACID
15

20
Let’s race! After testing the unknown substance, Jake knew his liquid was a _____ because the pH was 2. ACID
21
Prediction Chart Look at your prediction chart and correctly identify if each of the items on your list is an acid or a base. How many did you get right the first time? Were any “shocking” to you?
22
I can… List at least 3 differences between an acid and a base.
Give at least 3 examples of an acid and a base.
