Did You Know? 1 in 4 adults volunteer through an organization, demonstrating that volunteering is an important activity for millions of Americans. 64.5 million Americans volunteered nearly 7.9 billion hours last year. The estimated value of this volunteer service is nearly $175 billion. Generation X (born in the early 1960s through the early 1980s) has the highest volunteer rate of any age group. An Overview Staff will play a critical role with these events by recruiting the right volunteers, training the volunteers and managing the volunteers to outcomes. Volunteers will participate in the recruitment of other volunteers and the recruitment and coaching of teams, recruitment of sponsors and planning for and execution the event day of. The right of being offered the opportunity to become a volunteer. The right to be thoughtfully selected and appropriately assigned to a meaningful job. The right to expect training and supervision so as to be enabled to do the job well. The right to be involved in the planning and evaluating the program in which one is participating. Keys to Building A Strong Volunteer Driven Event
Partnership Respect/Honesty Understanding by each volunteer and staff that you are equal and are both needed in order to accomplish MDA’s mission. Your Key to Success… Be the Coach and Empower the Volunteers to “Play”
ED and MW Lead should develop a recruitment plan for recruiting the “right” players for the volunteer team. Identify potential leaders that can influence your event and community for Muscle Walk success. Identify multiple volunteers for each position so you are prepared with game plan ABC. Work with your lead volunteers on the specific “plays” and deadlines for them to happen. Keep your team motivated by celebrating small wins along the way. Wednesday, January 16, 2019

Next Steps… ED and MW Lead should develop a recruitment plan for recruiting the “right” players for the volunteer team. Review the draft volunteer job descriptions attached and provide feedback to the Muscle Walk team at Work together to identify your potential volunteer team for the event. Prospects should include leaders and worker bees. Set up preliminary meetings with your potential volunteer leadership candidates for the month of January to discuss the volunteer opportunities and where they feel their talents will suit best.
