2. “It” Test Before doing ANYTHING, you should do the “it” test first.
If you decide the word is a gerund, you should be able to replace it with the word “it”. If it makes sense when you replace the word with “it”
Ex: Snorkeling is a wonderful adventure.
It is a wonderful adventure.
Does this make sense?

3. Gerund Practice A win requires earning.
Kicking earns points in two different ways in this sport.
A team earns three points by kicking.
Defending goal is crucial in most sports.
Eating is allowed only in the lobby.
The mosquitoes finally stopped biting.
Walking is good exercise.

4. Gerunds can function as:
Subject: gerund comes at the beginning of the sentence.
Example: Eating is my favorite thing to do.
Direct Object: gerund comes after an Action Verb in a sentence. AV=DO
Example: A win requires celebrating.
Predicate Noun: gerund comes after a Linking Verb.
Example: My favorite thing to do is eating.
Object of the Preposition: gerund comes after a Preposition.
Example: Gavin earned three points by catching.
