1 Louis Riel Social Studies 7

2 Louis Riel He was a francophone catholic, born of a metis Father and an Canandienne mother in the red river settlement. He identified as metis. He was college educated, and spoke English, French, and cree He saw the transfer of Rupert’s land to Canada as an opportunity for the red river settlement to become its own province with its own government. This was good because then it could protect the rights of the francophone, Catholics, and Metis. When the metis formed the provisional government, they chose riel as president.

3 Louis Riel After the second Metis Uprising, Riel was imprisoned and executed. A jury of mostly English-speaking Canadians did not like riel because of his actions as president of the red river provisional government. At Fort Gary (after the metis took control of it), a group of settlers from Ontario, who thought British people should have all the power, tried to overthrow the provisional government led by riel. Riel’s government arrested a few of these settlers, and under Riel’s leadership, shot and killed one of them, Thomas scott. Some thought it was not justified, others thought it was a way to set an example of severity and firmness to those who raise prejudice and hatred.
