1 Death toll in Mexico rises

2 Dozens of buildings in central Mexico turned into plumes of dust and debris killing at least 216 people in Mexico City -- one of the busiest cities in the world -- and the surrounding areas when a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Tuesday. The earthquake has left a devastating impact in the region. An unaccounted number of people are staying at shelters around the city after losing their homes. Schools have closed indefinitely and millions remain without power. Less than two weeks ago, a magnitude-8.1 earthquake struck off the southern coast of the country, killing at least 90.

3 In Other News Hurricane Maria made landfall Wednesday morning as a strong Category 4 storm in southeast Puerto Rico. At landfall, Maria had sustained winds of 155 mph, just 2 mph short of Category 5 status. It was the first Category 4 hurricane to make landfall in Puerto Rico since 1932. Throughout President Trump's 41-minute address to the United Nations yesterday, he spoke of several global issues, however one of his most noteworthy remarks may have been, “The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea.” A new report produced by the International Labor Organization (ILO), a U.N. agency focusing on labor rights, suggests that there were more than 40 million people estimated to be victims of modern slavery in and one in four of those were children. The report estimates that last year, women and girls accounted for 71 percent of slavery victims, including those in the commercial sex industry. It's impossible to know exactly how many people are living in modern slavery, and different studies have produced different estimates. One reason is that modern slavery is a hidden crime that's difficult to identify. Another is that different studies use different definitions of slavery, with some including forced marriage, for example, and others not.
