1 Developing your leadership cq
Introduce myself. In today's global society, leaders will encounter people from many different countries and cultures.  While there is an expectation that our employees understand American value systems and organizational norms, the reality is they come with their own set of values and norms that may be different from our own.  Leaders should be aware of the role that culture plays in the workplace.  What does CQ stand for? Cultural intelligence. I’m with you for a very short time today, but my hope is to just give you an awareness of this topic so that you can explore it further in the future. 2 A new skill for TODAY’S GLOBAL leaders
IQ EQ CQ Organizational leaders in today’s world are all global leaders in the sense that they lead individuals from many different cultural backgrounds. Leaders need intelligence (IQ), emotional intelligence (EQ), and also cultural intelligence (CQ). What is CQ? Ask Ps what this means and make notes on B or FC Show video from 1:15-3:00:

3 “One thing to remember is that developing and practicing cultural competence isn’t about using strategies on other people. It’s about your way of being. If you don’t understand someone, being willing to suspend your judgments and ask questions will be more effective than any strategy you’ve learned.” Read the quote and ask Ps what comes to mind when they think about this. Do they think about cross-cultural differences in the workplace and how to bridge those gaps?

4 THE ICEBERG THEORY OF CULTURE
ABOVE THE WATER: food, music, art, clothing, holiday celebrations, literature, games, flags, language, religious rituals BELOW THE WATER: value systems, notions of beauty, social customs and etiquette, attitudes toward social status, work hierarchy, attitudes toward age and gender, importance of personal space, importance of time, body language and gestures, religious beliefs Has anyone heard of the iceberg theory of culture? How does this image of an iceberg relate to culture? Above the water you have the aspects of culture that are easily visible. What are some examples? Below the water you have the aspects of culture that are invisible. What are some possible examples of those? So why is this concept important to know in the workplace? Why is it important for leaders to be aware of?

5 HOFSTEDE’S SIX DIMENSIONS OF CULTURE
Hofstede was a researcher in the Netherlands who began doing research in companies back in the 1980s and he developed six dimensions of culture (read from slide). I’d like to point out the dimension on individualism and collectivism. This is one of those dimensions that stands out a lot when it comes to cultural differences. Individualism is a focus on a person’s individual freedom and collectivism focuses on the good of the group. Here on this chart I have selected US and China and you can see the large difference between the two countries. Tell the story of Mei in Continuing Education who did not speak up, offer suggestions, or point out errors. Does anyone have a story of cultural conflict from their workplace? Pull up the website. Are there two countries that you would like to see on the chart? Facilitate discussion. We don’t have enough time to go through these today but I wanted you to be aware of this tool and the information that you can obtain on national cultures.

6 Discussion questions Refer back to the Iceberg Theory of Culture and the cultural aspects below the water.  In what ways do you think one of your supervisors from a highly individualistic culture (i.e., U.S.) might have a clash with an employee (or a client) from a collectivistic culture (i.e., China) in the workplace? How can leaders improve their cultural IQ to make a more positive impact in the workplace? Present the Qs, give Ps time to discuss, and then debrief.
