2 Introduction What is Mantle of the Expert (MoE)?
And why am I talking about it to you? A case for searchable forums. MoE is exciting. MoE is relevant. MoE is useful. MoE is easy. See for a more the M0E website introduction.

3 What’s in it for me? Fun and roleplay in lessons.
Better behaviour due to more engagement. Cross-curricular teaching with an over-arching theme. Simplification of lesson planning and flexibility. An enriched curriculum. A flexible approach.

4 Key Elements of MOe Mantle of the Expert is not the same thing as topic work or roleplay. It’s distinguishing features are: The children take on the “mantle of the expert” – authority and competence; leadership. Teaching is inductive rather than instructive, designed for open inquiry. A patron hires the children to work for him or her. Through their work, the children learn. The children benefit from taking on the MoE by gaining responsibility, taking a leadership role and “owning” their education; and many unexpected or additional learning experiences.

5 Addressing concerns and overcoming obstacles.
FAQ’s Addressing concerns and overcoming obstacles. Won’t this be a lot of extra work for me? Do you need specialised knowledge of procedures? Can this be done for older children too? Does this mean I won’t be able to teach the material I normally would? How many subjects should this cover?

6 Mantle of the expert in action: a Year 1 Case Study
Helping the Easter Bunny: A Geography and Science “Mantle” Patron: The Easter Bunny. Task: hired the children to (a) find a country for him to live in, and (b) help him build a home there. Targets: the first phase taught the children about geography – both world and UK. The second phase taught the children about the science of pushing and pulling. See it at
