4. Key Elements of MOe
Mantle of the Expert is not the same thing as topic work or roleplay. It’s distinguishing features are:
The children take on the “mantle of the expert” – authority and competence; leadership.
Teaching is inductive rather than instructive, designed for open inquiry.
A patron hires the children to work for him or her.
Through their work, the children learn.
The children benefit from taking on the MoE by gaining responsibility, taking a leadership role and “owning” their education; and many unexpected or additional learning experiences.

6. Mantle of the expert in action: a Year 1 Case Study
Helping the Easter Bunny:
A Geography and Science “Mantle”
Patron: The Easter Bunny.
Task: hired the children to (a) find a country for him to live in, and (b) help him build a home there.
Targets: the first phase taught the children about geography – both world and UK. The second phase taught the children about the science of pushing and pulling.
