Magnesium (Mg) Magnesium is a gray-white, though metal. It’s a group 2 element (alkaline earth metals).
2
Why is it called Magnesium?
Magnesium gets his name from a greek word “Magnesia”. Initially, Humphry Davy proposed the name “Magnium” based on the mineral Magnesite ( MgCO3) which came in fact from Magnesia in Greece.
3
How, where, and by whom was it discovered?
In 1618 a farmer named Henry Wicker, in England, wanted to give his cows water from a well. They refused to drink it because of the weird taste the water had, however, Wicker did notice that water healed scratches and rashes which eventually was recognised as Magnesium Sulphate. Joseph Black recognized Magnesium as an element in 1775
4
Element’s uses Magnesium is used in products that benefit from being lightweight (car seats, laptops, cameras) Magnesium hydroxide is added to plastics to make them fire retardant Magnesium oxide is used to make heat-resistant bricks for fireplaces, it is also added to cattle feed and fertilizers Magnesium hydroxide, sulfate, chloride, and citrate are all used in medicine.
5
How is magnesium mined or obtained
Magnesium is obtained by electrolysis of magnesium chloride, which can be obtained in unlimited quantities from the ocean. Magnesium can also be obtained, in smaller amounts, from the magnesium- bearing minerals dolomite.
